Chevrolet Corvette C3: Classic Cars

If “Easy Rider” was filmed with cars, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper would definitely have one. Corvette C3 drive a car. C3 series special therapy: The Silver Feast, which takes a closer look at classic cars.

While the early models of the Chevrolet Corvette C3 from the late 60s and early 70s, which were introduced in 1967, have now risen in price significantly, those born in the late 70s still offer the opportunity to buy a good C3 for good money. . In addition, the car has a certain level of maturity, which promises the most trouble-free operation possible – even in everyday use. A special treat from this late vintage is the so-called Anniversary Edition from 1978. In that year, Chevrolet celebrated the 25th anniversary of the legendary American sports car.

However – apart from the speed car series, which had 6,502 units and according to the Indy 500 – no small number was sold, and therefore all Corvettes built in 1978 can call themselves “Anniversary”. However, there is a small exception – “Silver Anniversary”, which was built 15,283 times. But behind this is not an independent model of C3, but a special two-tone paint color is available for an additional payment of 399 US dollars, which gives the model of the Anniversary a special touch, especially in conjunction with the interior of white imitation leather. Classic Cars: Chevrolet Corvette C3

Driving dynamics are characterized by the power of the Chevy V8 in the tried and tested manner. In our case, this is a 350 cubic inch or a small block of 5733 centimeters, which, being breathed by a four-time Rochester carburetor, produces a standard 180 hp (132 kW) at 4000 revolutions per minute. Over the years, the performance of American V8 engines has declined rapidly against a background of severe production restrictions and the dreaded “fuel crisis”. This trend did not stop at the Corvette. Especially in combination with a three-speed automatic transmission, this C3 is not a performance car, as the sporty look still promises.

But he is not as weak as he is feared. A number of factors ensure a good portion of fun driving in the best sense of “American Driving”. Although not blessed with several hundred horsepower, the Chevy V8 proves its worth as a torque miracle and an example of pulling power even with reduced power. It jumps happily from the depths of the engine speed range just above idle speed and enables acceleration from tight bends. The fact that 180 horses is limited more “higher”, ie at a maximum speed of 4000 rpm, is easy to find, at least on the country road.

Two sides of V8 culture

The Corvette C3 drives with better brakes than its reputation

This Corvette C3 can be driven with incredible precision. A well-coordinated power steering with a properly defined center position – and in our case not half a hand’s width to play on the steering gear – is primarily responsible for ensuring that the driver hits the intended line. Four disc brakes that are easy to control and designed for sport-specific cruising speeds ensure you can get there precisely at high speeds. The suspension and damping are firm, but not stiff, so the C3 is also suitable for long trips. However, whether this should result in a holiday lasting several weeks seems doubtful given the limited storage space in the rear. If the two removable roof sections of the “T-Roof” are installed in the wonderful summer weather, there is no room left for any large load.

So, even as a “Silver Anniversary”, the C3 is and remains what it was meant to be: a great driving machine for enthusiasts. C3 owners don’t have to worry about longevity – really. As is known, the Corvette’s exterior skin is made of durable and corrosion-resistant plastic, which would eliminate unsightly rust holes in the wheel arches. C3 deserves attention in the lower area. The side members of the two frames must be checked for external and internal corrosion as well as the axle members. A check of the wheel suspension is also recommended, as maintenance given to the C3 over the decades varies greatly from car to car. Therefore, if in doubt, you should give preference to a well-preserved copy.
