While waiting for Chevrolet to announce a New bolt which will reclaim the title of the cheapest electric car in the United States, the Equinox EV should settle for being an affordable electric SUV with a range of over 300 miles.

Instead of offering a more expensive version of the 2RS, starting at $44,995, as originally announced, Chevrolet decided to go first with the more modest, front-wheel-drive Equinox 1LT.

The Chevy Equinox is the cheapest electric long-range SUV in the United States

Priced at $34,995, the Equinox 1LT is cheaper than Tesla’s base model. Tesla Model Y based on the full amount of the US tax credit of $7,500, but Chevy has confirmed that it will be eligible for a government subsidy at the time of purchase. In other words, the first Equinox EV that Chevrolet will go on sale next quarter will start at $27,495.

So Chevrolet has the green light to tout the price and range of the Equinox, saying it will be the cheapest electric SUV with a 300-mile range in the United States. The Equinox 1LT has an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles, which is more than the Tesla Model Y Long Range that costs $47,990 before tax credit.

It’s true that the Equinox is a small crossover and that Chevrolet still doesn’t hold the same weight as Tesla when it comes to electric vehicles. It certainly has the credibility built by the success story of America’s cheapest electric car — the Bolt — and the Equinox may soon boast that same affordable price.
