Chevrolet Camaro: The end of production – the end forever?

There have been rumors about the end of the Camaro line at Chevrolet since mid-2019, parent company General Motors (GM) confirmed that the long tradition of the horse car will end with the sixth generation of the model. If you still wanted a Camaro, you had to buy it in the 2024 model year. Camaro production at the Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan was scheduled to end in January 2024.

However, the end of the Camaro came sooner than expected. As GM confirmed to several American media, the last model of the coupé and convertible series was produced on December 14, 2023. The last Camaro built was a representative of the hardcore version: the ZL1 Coupé, i.e. a variant of the model with 659 hp and standard 881 cubic feet of Newton’s 6.2-liter V8, with a six-speed gearbox and 1LE equipment package. It is not yet known if this car will go on sale or remain in GM’s hands and possibly end up in a museum.

Farewell Camaro package

Chevrolet at least celebrated the Camaro’s passing in style. A “Collector’s Edition” package was launched for the 2024 Camaro RS and SS as well as a limited number of ZL1-equipped cars. The farewell package was only offered in the North American market. In other words: Only customers in the US and Canada could shop here. The Japanese market was taken into consideration by the Vivid Orange Edition. We present special examples of farewell to you in the photo gallery.

The end of the Chevrolet Camaro after six model generations is not the end of the Camaro story, said Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell when announcing the end of production. “While we are not announcing an immediate successor today, rest assured that this is not the end of the Camaro.” Insiders speculate that the Camaro will also return in electric vehicle form, similar to what Chrysler announced for the Dodge Challenger and Charger models.

Very few sales

In 2018, the Camaro came in third in the US muscle and horsepower sales with 51,000 units – behind the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. The 2019 facelift was not well received by fans, which is why a few emergency changes were urgently needed for the 2020 model year. But even with this, the Camaro continued to lag behind the sales figures of the Ford Mustang and Dodge Challenger. In 2022, Chevrolet sold only 24,652 models; In this year the count stands at only 17,337 units (until the end of November).

The Camaro rolled off the assembly line as a coupe and convertible from 1967 to 2002 in several model generations. Then there was a break that lasted until 2009. In 2010 it started again – and quite successfully. But the Camaro could not achieve the success of the Mustang. Ford is not even thinking about abandoning the Mustang and is developing it even harder; Recently a new generation came on the market. Dodge, on the other hand, has already pulled the ripcord on its Challenger and Charger muscle cars. Both are removed as combustion engines. The future is here in electric ranges. Chevrolet scores points in the sports car segment with the new mid-engine Corvette, which is well received by customers.

Yes, the more variety, the better. No, I’ve never been interested in that.

Chevrolet ended production of the popular Camaro horse car in December 2023 after six generations of the model. There won’t be a direct successor, but GM wants to continue the model name. How has not yet been revealed. The next Camaro will probably be an electric vehicle on GM’s familiar Ultium platform.
