Tesla’s plans to expand the plant in Grünheide (Oder-Spree) have met with further criticism. In a petition, the initiative of citizens Grünheide (BI) calls for the plans to be abandoned. The project endangers the environment and will be at the expense of the people in the area, BI chairman Manu Hoyer told rbb on Thursday. BI therefore firmly rejects the extension.

Forest and water protection is needed

According to BI, it fears that more forests will fall under the expansion plans. According to Hoyer, that could have a big impact. “We are one of the driest regions in Germany and the water association has been asking us to use less water for years.” Deforestation and siltation would exacerbate this problem, Hoyer continued.

In addition, forests are threatened especially in times of climate change, said the Chairman of BI. According to the report on the state of forests, 8,000 hectares of empty areas were created between 2019 and 2021. When asked that Tesla will have to plant a new forest for each cleared hectare, Hoyer said: “That’s really a killer argument from for the solution, note d. the editor) 300 hectares of forests have been cut down and small farms are being replanted 50 to 100 kilometers away, the residents of the area are not benefiting from it.”

In addition, BI said that the planned expansion area, which is located to the east of the existing factory area, is a water protection area, which prohibits “converting the forest to another type of use”.

plans are unclear

BI also charges that Tesla’s expansion plans are unclear. “What they want to build there was already in the first show,” Manu Hoyer said. Although Tesla has not yet completely built on its previous 300 hectares, parts of the factory planned there should now be implemented on the expansion site. “We don’t really understand why they want to extend the time suddenly,” said BI Chairman.

According to the initiative, almost 600 supporters have signed the petition so far (as of July 28, 2022, 5 pm). BI does not know who among the signatories, said Heuer. In September, the signatures will be handed over to representatives of the state government, the municipality of Grünheide and the state office for the environment.
