This Papa’s Fiat 500 will be auctioned

The Fiat 500L used by Pope Francis during his trip to New York in 2015 will be auctioned on May 31. Estimated between $50,000 and $100,000, it shows just 1,400 kilometers on the odometer.

It’s a small black car like any other, very simple. Unless it was borrowed by a very special guest. In 2015, during his trip to New York, Pope Francis drove around in a Fiat 500L, a station wagon version of the Italian city’s famous station wagon, before heading down Fifth Avenue in his papal car. Almost ten years later, the small black Fiat will be auctioned in Toronto by RM Sotheby’s auction house on May 31. The car had already been auctioned for the first time for charity purposes, for a total of 82,000 dollars. This time, the Pope’s Fiat 500L could reach $100,000 according to initial estimates, with only 1,400 kilometers on the odometer.

This is not Papa’s first Fiat 500 to be auctioned in the United States. In fact, during his trip, François borrowed the same car… in six copies! The cities of New York, Washington and Philadelphia, which welcomed the distinguished guest, each had two examples of the black minivan. One of the two cars of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia had already been auctioned in 2016, the profits of which were also given to Catholic associations.

Fiat 500 is Pope Francis’ favorite car. Simple and popular, this small city car has nothing to do with the big luxury cars used by leaders around the world. This is undoubtedly the reason why François again chose a small city car for his visit to Marseille in September 2023. With more attention to detail, from this time on, the white color of the car matched its host.
