Rimac breaks record for fastest reverse speed (video)

EVs are better in a number of areas compared to old-style gas sedans, but they’re still far behind in one area: top speed. The immediate power of electric motors turns even an old electric car into a decent racer, but in the long run you still need a lot of big cylinders. Unless of course you completely reverse the race.

Back

That also seemed like a good idea for the men and women of Rimac’s electronic hypercar brand. With the 1914 hp Nevera, the team traveled to the Papenburg Motor Test, a station with two four-kilometer straights.

Nevera had previously run 411 kilometers per hour there in special limit conditions, but for the new record the target was even lower. The car was supposed to reach 165.08 kilometers per hour … on the contrary.

The record is broken

The previous record held by the 2002 Caterham 7 Fireblade was brutally broken by Rimac. Nerva reached 275.4 kilometers per hour. The advantage of the hyper-EV is the lack of gears, which means that the Nevera – like the old DAF – can use its full potential in reverse.

Still the running record was not official: after all, the cooling system, aerodynamics and steering are not designed to work backwards. The famous Guinness Book of Records was there once to write Rimac into the history books.
