Lexus LBX (2024): The luxury Toyota Yaris Cross has one lower equipment (update: prices are known)

1: The Lexus LBX is the smallest Lexus ever

The Lexus LBX is 4.19 meters long, 1.82 meters wide and 1.54 meters tall. This makes the LBX the smallest Lexus ever and 30 centimeters shorter than the current compact Lexus, Lexus UX. Additionally, the new Lexus compact SUV is also 4.32 inches shorter than the Lexus CT 200h, which is no longer available as new. The luggage compartment of 332 liters is larger than that of the UX (320 liters) but not bigger. Audi Q2 – to name a competitor – delivers 405 liters. The wheelbase is 2.58 m.

2: The Lexus LBX is completely electric

A small caveat: The Lexus LBX is not fully electric. The announcement of the 100% electric version is also absent from the press release. Because the crossover has been developed specifically for Europe and, according to Lexus, should be one of the brand’s best sellers in Europe, we find this surprising. The Lexus LBX is a hybrid SUV, with a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder gasoline engine and an electric motor. System power is 136 hp and maximum torque 185 Nm. There is also a version with an additional electric motor on the rear axle that turns the Lexus LBX into a four-wheel drive.

3: No large grille

Anyone who has never wanted to be seen in a Lexus because of the huge spindle grille and sharp curves on the bodywork can breathe a sigh of relief; The Lexus LBX has a grille that is obviously not very noticeable and the car as a whole seems to calm the eyes.

We think that’s a bit of a shame, because it’s new Lexus RZ 450e of Lexus RX you can easily pick it out, while the Lexus LBX is less recognizable. It looks a bit like Smart #1 and Cupra Born. On the back we see a light bar in full width with the brand name written. It looks good on him, but it is far from original.

4: Touch Yaris Cross

The Lexus LBX is based on the GA-B platform which can also be found under Toyota Yaris Cross, or it was adapted according to the wishes of Lexus. Toyota’s luxury brand promises precise steering response, stable cornering and superior comfort. Especially regarding the latter, we trust Lexus in its blue eyes.

Driving a Lexus is like detaching yourself from the world and flying above traffic on a magic carpet. To prevent unwanted vibrations and noise, the three-cylinder has a horizontal shaft.

5: Inner luxury

What we do not doubt for a second is the interior, which, according to Lexus, exudes the class of cars from the top groups. At first glance we see good materials and a quiet design without too many physical keys, but fortunately not too few. Below the 9.8-inch central display are physical buttons for controlling, among other things, the air conditioner. We also see a strong lever, but therefore pleasant to work, for automatic transmission.

6: the name …

LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover and means based on Lexus so success for Lexus as a company in Europe. For the first time, Europe is the leading region for the development of the new Lexus. This should result in the LBX becoming one of Lexus’ best sellers here. That shouldn’t be too difficult, considering the huge popularity of compact SUV models in Europe, but mainly because of the low sales numbers of other Lexus models.

Lexus LBX price and delivery time

The new Lexus LBX will enter the Dutch market in early 2024. Prices start at 35,995 euros, which makes the hybrid SUV slightly cheaper than the current most talked about model: the fully electric Volvo EX30 (from 36,795 euros).

The LBX price list is a bit complicated, because the offerings aren’t necessarily the most luxurious when you go expensive. Instead, you have a basic model filled with four variations that are very different from each other. Above is a very expensive model – Lexus LBX previous edition – of which only 10 will come to the Netherlands.

• LBX (standard version): 35,995 euros
• Luxury: 40.495 euros
• Emotion: 40.995 euros
• Rest: 41.995 euros
• Wild: 42.495 euros
• Original Edition (10 NL pieces): 48,495 euros

The Lexus LBX has front-wheel drive as standard, upgrading to AWD costs 3000 euros.

Standard equipment for the Lexus LBX

Every LBX has a 9.8-inch touchscreen, climate control and 17-inch alloys. A large package of driver assistance systems is also standard, so cruise control doesn’t cost anything extra.

The seats and door panels are cloth-covered as standard. If you want the most luxurious equipment, the Lexus dealer will rub his hands, because then you end up with one of the four most expensive versions. Sensation and Cool are about sports and Luxury and Comfort are about luxury.

Other reasons to upgrade to a quad include heated front seats, lumbar support for the driver and a height-adjustable passenger seat – in other words: you’ll sit more comfortably.

What makes Original Edition so special?

What makes the top model, limited to 10 pieces for 48,495 euros, so special, apart from its high price? It is based on the Cool (42,495 euros) and has the Top Package for 5295 euros. So you are already 48 grand. You get Full LED headlights, a Mark Levinson sound system and a head-up display, among other things. But the Original Edition also looks a little different, with black and chrome accents, differently patterned C-pillars and unique badging inside and out. But that is also possible for that kind of money.
