Volkswagen is investing heavily in improving team rooms and creating lounge areas. Employees should feel comfortable and see the Group as an attractive employer.

Wolfsburg. Initially, the modern fund of 125 million euros negotiated by the works council and company management was a hypothetical concept for many Volkswagen employees. But now, almost a year after the start, the first steps can be seen and experienced in the German plants VW.

The live area comes first this time

Background: As part of a recent planning round, the works council and company management agreed on a modern fund. It is about 125 million euros that Volkswagen wants to invest in its German plants within five years – mainly in improving the working environment. Here again the Pillar applies: The direct area (production) comes first. After all, many production workers have felt undervalued when it comes to investment for years. Volkswagen wants to change that.

Modern team rooms and beautiful meeting spaces

The steps of the five-year plan started at the beginning of 2022, the first ones are almost finished. “In Wolfsburg, the first upgraded team rooms and meeting centers are nearing completion or in a good planning stage,” said a VW spokesperson when asked by AZ/WAZ. The creation of outdoor meeting places in outdoor areas has been promoted. In particular, relaxation areas with benches and plants were created and “integrated into the existing environment”. These new resting areas will be provided with privacy, sun and wind protection – in the form of plants and umbrellas.

Other areas are also being modernized

Measures have already been implemented in other plants: 25 team rooms have been renovated in Emden, and a production strategy room has been established in Hanover. Meetings and workshops are now possible, and employees can also be connected digitally. In Braunschweig, the first of the four team rooms in Hall 32a has been improved – an environment has been created for employees “that is now protected against noise, pollution and drafts”. In addition, soundproof ceilings have been installed and ventilation and lighting have been improved.

Investment is more important than ever

The deputy chairman of the works council of VW, Gerardo Scarpino, is satisfied: “With the projects from the modernization fund, we ensure an attractive working environment at Volkswagen. This investment is more important than ever for our company, not least because of population development.” That is why the labor council campaigned for a modern fund: “We are seeing success now.”
