Chery is not only bringing electric cars to Europe

The Chinese manufacturer Chery is pushing into the European market. The company relies on several brands. It will start this year in the Netherlands, among others, and Germany will also be on the program in 2024. The Car Week and T-Online.de to know more about the plans.

Chery plans to have three brands and around a dozen models in the medium term. It starts with the Omoda brand, which chief strategy officer Zhu Shaodong wants to position primarily against Korean carriers. “With their speed, their dedication and their success, they are our role models,” said Zhu, “and with their market share as well.”

“Omoda as a design-oriented brand is something like our Kia and as an answer to Hyundai we are bringing Jaecoo, with more rustic and sensible cars,” the manager explained. And with Exlantix, like Genesis, they are targeting high income earners.

Unlike many Chinese manufacturers, Chery is not only focusing on electric cars but also combustion engines when expanding into Europe. “The world is not yet ready for everyone to drive electric cars everywhere,” says Zhu.

The first model in this country will be the Omoda5, an SUV with a length of 4.4 meters. The series is offered as a conventional combustion engine, as a hybrid and as a pure electric vehicle. The final version is available with a 48 or 64 kWh battery and an output of 100 or 150 kW (136/204 hp). With a consumption of less than 15 kWh per 100 km, the Chinese expect a range of 350 or 440 km. The alternating current (AC) charge works with up to 11 kW, the direct current (DC) charge with up to 110 kW.

The second model planned is the larger SUV Omoda7, which will only be available as a combustion engine and hybrid. Along with Omoda, Chery creates the Jaecoo brand. Most rust models use the same platforms, but come with different storage configurations such as plug-in hybrids. Like Omoda’s, Jaecoo’s varieties are in the short and medium class.

The Exlantix pure electric car brand is scheduled to be launched in late 2024 or early 2025. Initially, sedans and SUVs in the five-meter class are equipped with 800-volt technology for super-fast charging and 80 kWh batteries for a range of more than 600 kilometers.
