Honda is looking forward to a new partnership with Alonso

Honda Racing Corporation president Koji Watanabe is delighted that Honda and Fernando Alonso will work together again from 2026 when the Japanese car giant will become Aston Martin’s new engine supplier.

Alonso and Honda also worked together in the McLaren team between 2015 and 2017, but that turned out to be a big disappointment. With Honda, Alonso wanted to be champion again at McLaren, but Honda’s V6 power source lacked much power compared to the dominant Mercedes and was not particularly reliable. Confusion took over and the Spaniard named the power source a ‘GP2 engine’ at Honda’s home circuit of Suzuka. After three years of back and forth, McLaren and Honda parted ways and the team from Woking entered into a joint venture with Renault.

“It was a very difficult period for everyone at Honda and McLaren,” Honda president Koji Watanabe recalls of 2015-2017. “It is probably one of the most frustrating periods in our history and that is why the partnership failed. But we have become stronger and Alonso has not stopped either. I hope that we can fight for victories and titles together after that painful experience. .” really behind us,” concludes Watanabe.
