He will take charge of his final home game as Melford boss on Saturday, against Downham Town (3pm), before his final game against Hadleigh United on Wednesday (7.45pm).

In his statement on X, Hennessey wrote: “After four fantastic years with the club, I can confirm that I will be stepping down as first team manager of Long Melford at the end of the season.

“We have had a great journey and I will be forever grateful to the people I got to work with on this journey.

“From day one, I was made to feel part of something more than just a football club. Thank you to every player who ever pulled that Melford shirt off for me.

“I would like to thank Richard Kemp for his unwavering support and dedication to this club. I thank the committee for believing in me and the team.â

He added: “A big thank you to Jamie Bradbury for bringing me to the club and showing me how the ‘side of a small village in Suffolk’ can get under your skin and take over your life if you let it.

“Thank you to all our volunteers and helpers, without you, there would be no club. Thank you to our fans, you may be few in number but you are strong in your love for this club.

“Finally, thank you to my family. For your patience, understanding, support and encouragement. I know I’m not always here because of football, but I wouldn’t be here without you.

“To all at Long Melford, I say thank you. I want nothing but success and goodbye.â

Hennessey admitted that he does not know his future in football but told people to ‘stay tuned for the next chapter’.
