Cupra Born VZ: 325 hp electric sports car (2024)

The Cupra Born has always been a sporty derivative of the Volkswagen ID.3, although it is more about the exterior. The new VZ variant is now pushing the boundaries of compact electrics.

BMW Performance

Let’s go straight to the point: Born VZ develops 326 hp and 545 Nm of torque thanks to its new rear electric motor on the rear axle. Figures that, less than ten years ago, ruled the roost under the hood of the BMW M135i. Performance is more than enough: 0 to 100 km / h in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 200 km / h.

In addition, the Cupra doesn’t pull any punches, as the suspension is also under scrutiny. There are new springs, new shock absorbers, revised front geometry and revised anti-roll bars. Strangely, the Cupra sticks to rear drum brakes, perhaps the Achilles heel of this Birthday VZ. Thanks to the large battery of 79 kWh (net), the Cupra range can reach 570 km. Charging can be done with 11 kW in alternating current and 170 kW in direct current.

Subtle influence

Those who were hoping for a sports character to be even more accentuated on the outside will be a little disappointed. There are no extended wheel arches or large spoilers. As with the MG4 XPower, it holds subtle flourishes. For example, the 20-inch rims hide the wide rubber, there are the required VZ logos and two additional special colors: Dark forest and Black Midnight.

Inside, Cupra installs Formentor VZ5’s CUP Bucket seats in the front, two large sports seats made of recycled materials. The new born Cupra “Velocidad” will go on sale from this summer. We are already looking forward to it!
