Cupra has a short history as a separate brand. However, nothing stands in the way of mentioning the country’s rich automotive history. The Spaniards have chosen a special place for the premiere of new cars. This is the Autodromo de Sitges-Terramar – one of the oldest race tracks in the world (built in the 1920s).
The first of three shows, including a novel combustion engine. And all this from a brand that is looking for its place between the mainstream premium segment and the mass market. It turns out that in the era of electromobility, there is still room for a petrol SUV. It is a compact Cupra Terramar (approx. 4.5 meters long), i.e. a plug-in hybrid with a new drive generation and a range of up to 100 km in electric mode.
Jorge Diez, CUPRA Design Director, was very enthusiastic: “We are sure that the new SUV from CUPRA will shake up one of the most competitive segments.” Unfortunately, it does not show more details besides the place of production. The Cupra Terramar will not be a Spanish product but a Hungarian one. It will come to the market from the Audi factory in Gyor, where, among others, the new Audi Q3 (hence the technical affinity between the models). And it will probably be the last combustion engine novel of the brand.
Wayne Griffiths, CEO of the CUPRA brand, makes no secret that the future of Cupra is electric. So the two new things are powered by electricity only. The SUV coupé will be the first to appear. The new Cupra Tavascan will expand the range already in 2024. The Spaniards announce a car with a wheel drive and two electric motors with a total power of 306 hp. It is important that the technical relatives of the Volkswagen ID.5 are nothing new among Cupra electricians. The most anticipated car will appear a year later.
Only in 2025 we will see a new, small Cupra UrbanRebel crossover in Cupra showrooms, which after some time will also see its counterparts under other brands (perhaps Audi, Skoda or Volkswagen). This is the apple of the eye of Cupra’s German vice president. It was Werner Tietz who presented the most awaited novel. “The Cupra UrbanRebel will be the biggest project for our company in the coming years, as it is essential to our transformation as an electric brand. We are leading the development of a family of vehicles that will democratize sustainable urban mobility, for various brands. within the Volkswagen Group, ” he explained during the launch of the cars. However, he did not reveal whether the construction and the car with a power of up to 226 hp is not too much for the city. Do we also need a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 s or a range of up to 440 km in the city (Range version with a large battery).
UrbanRebel is the only one of the models presented that we can admire up close. The prototype is still a car without traditional door handles (the door only opens when we use the app on the tablet). However, it is full of solutions that we will see early on in other cars. It is worth considering the new design of the daytime running lights, the rear lights, the illuminated Cupra logo or the long-awaited thin frame near the screen in the console (the design installed on modern TV sets can be seen, among others, in Leon or Formentor after of facelift). The new drive, whose source of inspiration turned out to be the Sony Playstation pad, will also not remain only in the prototype phase.
One thing remains clear. Which of the featured models will be the first to be seen with the latest fashion trends we’ve learned at UrbanRebel. Cupra is limited to the announcement that by 2025 a facelift awaits the Leona, Formentor and Born. Is the order mentioned random? you don’t have to…
