Daniel Ricciardo: “Couldn’t have done anything different” / Formula 1

Daniel Ricciardo started the last phase of the safety car on lap 47, which led to a controversial discussion. He describes the early end from his perspective.

Basically, Daniel Ricciardo could no longer be touched. On lap 47, the engine died without much warning between Lesmo’s two corners – and the Australian race came to an abrupt end. “A stupid, sad ending,” as he put it.

Problem: “I got stuck in gear and couldn’t shift into neutral. Then I tried to shift because I thought it would be safer there.” Ricciardo wanted to use the emergency exit from his McLaren.

“But when I stopped, that’s it, I got out of the car wanting to go down the road. However, there were fences everywhere and I had to jump on the Tecpro and find a gap somewhere,” he said.

A stuck gear then also delayed the rescue, ending the race under the safety car, which caused controversy.
Ricciardo almost apologized: “I couldn’t have done anything differently.”

For him it was another frustrating finish, the twelfth zero this year. Eighth place was possible, he had managed to keep Pierre Gasly in the AlphaTauri behind him until the last moment.

“I could tell how frustrated he was. With these cars you can stay close, but it’s difficult to pass. I did everything I could not to make mistakes and put him behind. I realized he’s faster. I wasn’t happy with the pace, it was hard to push. I thought we’d be in the top eight , that’s a good result,” Ricciardo said.

Instead, he got nothing. again. “Unfortunately, 2022 is a sad year for me in terms of racing, but it is what it is.”
