At the MotoGP test in Barcelona, Fabio Di Giannantonio (VR46 Ducati) explained how he has been doing since his shoulder surgery. From afar he got his first impressions of his new workhorse, the GP25.
VR46 Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio was wearing a sling in the paddock during MotoGP testing in Barcelona. Due to his shoulder injury, the Italian was unable to grab the seeds for his own GP25, but he still managed to get his first impressions and help his team.
How is “Diggia” doing after his shoulder operation? “It’s much better than last week. The first few days after the operation were difficult – I couldn’t sleep and I was in a lot of pain,” said the 26-year-old. “But now it’s good and the medical staff are happy with the progress I’m making day after day day. Next week I’ll start treatment in the water. After another two weeks I can start rehabbing my shoulder. It’s going to be a long winter, but I’m fine.”
Di Giannantonio decided to end the season early after a doctor in Thailand underwent surgery on his injured shoulder at the beginning of November. It was therefore clear that he would not be able to participate in the official test at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after the last Grand Prix. The operation was necessary to strengthen a long-term injured shoulder as a result of his fall at the Red Bull Ring last August. #49’s goal is to get back on his Ducati at the MotoGP test in Sepang from February 5 to 7, 2025.
Does he regret his decision to have the surgery then? “If I continue to make such rapid improvements, I can come back quickly. I really regret that I missed the last few races, but I think we chose the right time for it,” said Roman. “The plan is that I can participate in the first official test in Sepang. But I will definitely not be there at 100 percent physically. Because if you see me naked now, you can tell that I have lost a lot of muscle. Rebuilding this takes a lot of time. For now I am sure we did everything at the right time.”
Ducati test rider Michele Pirro was at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with his GP25 on Tuesday. “I didn’t talk to Michele much because he was working. “My team and Ducati don’t want to tell me much about my feelings with the new bike so that I don’t ride the bike with bias and false expectations,” explained Di Giannantonio. “But of course I know what they are working on, they are trying what and in what areas the bike will be the best. We talk to each other, but don’t go into too much detail.”
In the season finale, Pirro stood in for Di Giannantonio in the VR46 team. He was racing with a GP23 – a bike that the test rider has not ridden for a long time. He had a hard time with it. “We knew that we had a limit with the GP23. Michele also confirmed this when he raced on Sunday with the old bike. He said that the bike does not fit and has no grip. Then we told him: ‘Welcome again,’ laughed Di Giannantonio. “We agreed with him, we had it all season . The GP24 is already a big step up compared to the 2023 machine. It looks like the GP25 is a bit better.”
Fabio Di Giannantonio is signed directly by Ducati until the end of 2026 and will ride in GP25 next season alongside Pecco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez.
