Watt is on

The Korean manufacturer presents its Ioniq 5 in the sporty “N” version. This electron-doped car is also equipped with the necessary tricks of a sports car with a combustion engine: exhaust pipes, two-clutch transmission with jerks, speedometer … It’s all there.

Until now, electric sports cars have been able to boast a large amount of horsepower and have been able to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in a short time. But most of them were soulless. in that quality of living, that ability to make you one with the machine, that internal combustion engine cars still have and that makes a sports car a real sports car.

But that has now changed. Because the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N has rewritten the rules of the game. Korean engineers have come up with an absolutely insane machine capable of recreating the essence of what contributes to automotive hedonism, both on the road and on the track.

What makes the Ioniq 5 N so different

However, there are certain mandatory criteria that make a car a sports car. Although the base of the Ioniq 5 N matches that of the family car of the same name, However, it still has a big difference: the car is longer (+80 mm), the track is higher (+50 mm), the chassis is special, the ride height is 20 cm lower and the car has a built-in shell or an electrically controlled rear differential – it’s all packed. in Desires.

Below, the battery output has increased from 77 to 84 kWh and now enables a range of up to 448 km. Thanks to its 800V design, the car can handle charging power of up to 350 kW, and charging from 10 to 80% now takes just 18 minutes. The two engines together spit out up to 650 hp or 770 Nm, of course distributed to all four wheels. The performance can begin.

Two cars in one

Now let’s talk about the “Normal”, “Eco” and “Sport” driving modes, which make the Ioniq 5 N an intelligent 100% electric crossover that is better than others.

Suspension control and noise insulation ensure a high level of comfort, the “one-pedal” driving mode enables a completely quiet ride, despite everything being built into the Alcantara bucket seat. Rear seat passengers enjoy plenty of space with sliding and folding rear seats (2/3-1/3). “And what does that have to do with the game?” I will get it soon.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Secret

The secret weapon of Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is its steering wheel with buttons and paddle switches. Of course, it takes a while to get used to understanding all the functions, menus and sub-menus, but once you get past that, that’s it. a happy celebration.

Delete is the “N” key, which shows the real look of the Ioniq 5 N, which has many pre-programmed or configurable functions:

  • “N Grin Boost” increases power from 609 to 650 hp within 10 seconds and accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h within 3.4 seconds.
  • With «N Drift Optimizer» you will be the king of drift.
  • “N Torque Distribution” adjusts front/rear torque in 11 levels.
  • “N Race” enables optimal energy management based on usage on the racetrack – depending on whether time is limited or whether you want to have fun on the track for as long as possible.

Now let’s go to the most amazing part: the two “N Active Sound” and “N e-Shift”. The first is used to reproduce the sound of the 4-cylinder engine (that of the i30 N) more realistically using speakers. Of course, including “Ratatatata” and clicking noises, which are very interesting when you release the accelerator pedal.

“N e-Shift” mimics the presence of an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Together they give the Ioniq 5 N all the qualities normally associated with a sports car with a combustion engine. Of course, this involves thousands of lines of computer code, which makes the task even worse due to the inherent functionality that these devices provide.

How does the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N perform in practice?

The result is simply amazing – on the road and on the racetrack. All the reactions of the car are similar to those of a sports car with a combustion engine. You even forget to look at the battery charge/life indicator which usually makes you very nervous because you are so emotional. The sound of the engine idling, the automatic gearshift that adjusts the level of noise and the torque approach, a light press of the gas pedal when decelerating – it’s all there.

On the track, in manual mode at high revs, the gear jerks when changing gears are increased, and if we touch the culprit at a false 7700 rpm, the discomfort of starting and stopping at speed is in all ways similar to that of cars with an engine of internal combustion. . You even start playing with the car, throwing it into corners, daring to skid, braking too late and accelerating too early – the car does all this very impressively.

There is only one problem

Of course there is size and, last but not least, weight. With 2.2 tons on the scale and a length of 4.72 m, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is not necessarily small and simple.

However, Korean engineers have managed to reduce the negative effects of its extra weight, at least on the road, within the limits of physics. Of course, the round trip ends with completely worn out tires. When braking, however, you can rest easy because the regenerative power is so strong that discs and pads are not used much, even in racing.

Is it worth buying?

It is clear that for track fans, an English or French ballerina or – if you have a high budget – a good Italian or German sports car will be more exciting. But the excellent work that Hyundai has achieved with the Ioniq 5 N is to be commended and it is certainly an important step.

Yes, you can also feel something in an electric car, and even at a good price: CHF 79,000.–. Hyundai wants the car to be more than just a stand-up world champion, which seems to be the norm for so-called sports cars in this segment at the moment, and we find that somewhat encouraging. We are very excited to see what happens next!
