But we are currently in the process of restarting our brand after a year and a half of internal discussions about how we want to be perceived in the future. We decided it was time for Smart to grow. We want it to be a more mature brandwhich coincides with the evolution from a small car to a hard drive segment.

Today our entire portfolio is purely electric. When we look into Concept #1, we can see the benefits of electrification. Above all, this is an amount of space that cannot be achieved for example with a conventional car or even a hybrid. This is one of the key success factors of Smart today and in the past: small on the outside, conflict on the inside. We will not forget about this, nor about electrification as a tool to ensure zero-emission indoor mobility.

And about two-set microcars?

With Concept # 1, we enter a new segment, expanding the portfolio of Smart and small SUVs, but we don’t give up on those two.

What are the development prospects for this smaller segment? Many producers have already withdrawn, claiming that there is no future.

In my opinion, it is the complete opposite component A will increase, not decrease. Perhaps as part of a broader concept, multimodal mobility. We entered Car2Go service (currently: join now)maybe even a little early, but we don’t give up on this idea.

In addition, when we consider the costs in the electromobility sector, including its distribution and scale effects, they will be lower and lower. I think then the small car segment will be more profitable than today. Then many producers may want to return to it.

Where do you see Smart in Europe in 5 years?

Our main brand is Mercedes-Benz and the cooperation between us is great. And for that we see us as a premium brand, but in a slightly different sense. We call it “first light” or “premium smart”. We want to be different in this new area, to surprise us, but of course we plan to win it. And I think that in five years we will be fully present in it and definitely more than two products.
