Citroen refreshes its engine range to meet EU requirements. More electricity, less gasoline

All manufacturers who want to sell cars in Europe are faced with changes to their lineups. It is already clear in which direction this change is heading – cars are becoming more electric, which allows for lower emissions and sometimes cheaper operation. This time, Citroen was proud of such changes, introducing modern drive units for the C5X, C5 Aircross, e-C4 and e-C4X models.

Let’s start with the big SUV, the C5 Aircross. Citroen has recently reworked this model, slightly refreshing the style, but leaving the smooth and comfortable character of the car. It has now introduced a new mild hybrid system with a power of 136 HP, replacing the combustion 1.2 with a power of 130 HP. Here, the basis is the well-known PureTech three-cylinder engine, which has been changed, among others: the timing – now it is driven by a chain. The gearbox was also changed – the 8-speed automatic was replaced by a six-speed gearbox. There is also room for an electric motor with a power of 21 kW (28 HP).

The location of the electric motor is quite unusual for a mild hybrid, but it works the same as in other models of this type, i.e. it is also a starter, alternator and supports the combustion engine when driving. The MHEV system stores its energy in a small 432 Wh battery located under the passenger seat. Despite its limited power, it is able to move the car independently for a few seconds or so.

The manufacturer promises that a car with this engine can drive the city up to 50 percent faster. It is fully powered by electricity, and the average fuel consumption can drop up to 30% compared to the 1.2 combustion engine.

A car with this drive is powerful enough for its character, although it is not a speed demon. The strat-stop system also works better, and you can feel the loss of power when driving. On the route, which led to the highway and many hills, the fuel consumption was about 8.3 l/100 km. We will have to wait for a more detailed test when the cars arrive in Poland. The price of this engine is PLN 155,000. PLN 950.

The engine on the C5X was also changed, but in this case the 1.6 combustion engine with a power of 180 HP was removed from the version, and in its place there was a plug-in hybrid with a power of 180 HP, but as a system. . These results are achieved with a 150 horsepower combustion engine and an 81 kW (110 HP) electric motor. The total torque of the hybrid is 360 Nm. Drive is transmitted through an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The manufacturer promises that the car can travel 62 km on the electric motor alone, using a battery with a capacity of 12.4 kWh (11.3 kWh net). In electric mode only, it can drive up to 135 km / h. Charging the battery takes about 1 hour. 40 minutes using a 7.4 kW charger.

A car with this engine accelerates to 100 km / h in 9.1 seconds, which is quite enough considering the nature of the car. Due to the exceptionally comfortable operation of the suspension, the car does not encourage to drive fast. However, the electric motor gives a pleasant feeling of driving with every slight press of the gas pedal, and the flexibility is at a good level. Prices for a car with a new engine start from PLN 224,000. PLN 800.

Citroen e-C4 and e-C4X – record low electricity consumption?

In the case of the electric C4, the 136 HP motor is now joined by a 156 HP version, which also has a large battery with a capacity of 54 kWh (4 kWh more). However, not only the battery has been expanded, but its chemical composition has been changed, which will lead to better durability and energy density. In practice, according to the manufacturer, the new battery provides a range of up to 420 km in the C4X and up to 415 HP in the C4 (in the weaker version it is 360 km). This could make customers more willing to buy an electric C4, and also allows them to start thinking about trips to the city.

Time to charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent. It takes 30 minutes on a fast charger and there is no difference between weak and strong versions. The car will have a power of up to 100 kW. Citroen also boasts that the changes introduced mean that the electric car can use an average of 12 kWh/100 km. For comparison, in the weaker version, the manufacturer declares that the electricity consumption per 100 kilometers is 16 kWh, which is already a very good result.

A new electric car can make a big difference compared to a weaker version. Although the electric cars from Stellantis could be praised for many things, their Achilles heel was a real bad line. A stronger system offers hope that these problems will be a thing of the past. Prices for the car and the 156-horsepower electric car have not been published yet.
