Emanuele Pirro on Ferrari: “That doesn’t make sense” / Formula 1

Italian Emanuele Pirro, a five-time Le Mans winner, is delighted that Ferrari is returning to endurance racing. And 61-year-old Roman explains what awaits new team boss Fred Vasseur.

Emanuele Pirro puts his hand on the pulse of top motor racing: In Formula 1, the Italian, who was born in Rome, has won 37 World Championship races (fifth in the 1989 Australian Grand Prix), for many years he worked for McLaren -Honda. as a test driver, and achieved his best result at Le Mans – a five-time winner, only Tom Kristensen (9 wins) and Jacky Ickx (6) were more successful. Over the years, Pirro has also worked as an FIA race commissioner in Formula 1 racing.

Ferrari clearly has a special place in the Italian’s heart. And as a former long-distance star, Pirro is thrilled that Ferrari is returning to endurance racing – and hypercar Ferrari 499P, which is currently running on the track in Sebring (USA). Emanuele says in Corriere dello Sport: “That touches me, because everyone knows what the old Ferrari has in endurance racing. That will inspire the Italians.”

Ferrari had made a strong start to the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, Monegasque Charles Leclerc was the only challenger to world champion Max Verstappen. But then the Dutch Championship and Red Bull won.

Emanuele Pirro says: “It didn’t go as well as it could have, there were difficulties with technology and team management. I believe that the new team boss Fred Vasseur will bring stability and clarity, he will bring order to the Scuderia’s unique human resources.”

“Trying a revolution now, that’s not good. Instead, it needs someone at the top who gives the power that exists to give the team the final momentum to win the title. »

And what about pilots Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz? Pirro continues: “At the Red Bull Championship, the distribution of roles between Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez is clear, Max is the stronger driver. But if you have the same two drivers, like Hamilton and Russell in Mercedes or Leclerc and Sainz in Ferrari, then the team boss should back the driver who has more problems; just as parents should help a weak child.”

“After that, in a tough time, the pilot who can bring this extra spark of inspiration wins. That makes the difference between stable mates.”
