Production begins for the Polestar 3 electric SUV

Production of the Polestar 3 has begun in Chengdu, China. Another production line is scheduled to start in the US in mid-2024. This series follows the more compact Polestar 4 as the Swedish-Chinese brand’s second SUV.

“The start of production of this fantastic car is an important step in our journey from a one-car to a three-car company this year,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath. “In addition, we have reached market readiness at the Ridgeville, South Carolina plant and are well on track with our plans to manufacture the Polestar 3 in the USA.”

Polestar 3 will be the first Polestar to be produced on two continents. The company says this supports its growth prospects in North America, Europe and Asia. It is not yet known when the model will be released in Europe.

The Polestar 3 is the first car based on the new all-electric technology platform developed and shared by Volvo Cars. The series was presented at the end of 2022. The manufacturer advertises the model as an “electric performance SUV” with “excellent driving dynamics”. The 4,900 mm long car is characterized by a new aerodynamic profile, in which special emphasis was placed on maintaining the typical characteristics of an SUV.

At launch, the Polestar 3 is available in a “rear-biased” configuration with two electric motors. The production car produces a total of 360 kW (490 hp) and 840 Nm of torque. This means you can go from 0 to 100 km/h in five seconds and continue up to 210 km/h. With the optional “Performance” package, the total output is 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm for acceleration to 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds. To save energy, a coupling function is available for the rear electric motor, which allows the car to be driven only by the front electric motor under certain conditions.

The 111 kWh battery gives the Polestar 3 a range of 610 km according to the WLTP standard. A conventional heat pump helps to use ambient heat for air conditioning and battery conditions. Polestar 3 is also equipped for two-way charging, thus providing the possibility of using “vehicle-to-grid” in the future.

The Polestar 3 Dual Motor (360 kW, 628 km) and Dual Motor with Performance Package (380 kW, 561 km) versions are available at the market launch at prices starting from 88,600 and 95,200 euros respectively.
