Next year, Schrötter would like to compete in the World Superbike Championship and fight for podium places there. We caught up with the 31-year-old during the WSBK weekend in Assen and talked about the current season and the future.

“I want to race in the Superbike World Championship next year. That was the goal from the beginning after leaving Moto2,” explains Schrötter in an interview Motorsport-Total.com. “Former MotoGP riders are often more attractive to WSBK teams. But WSBK teams have now realized that the level of the Supersport World Championship has risen.”

“It’s great for us to see what Nicolo Bulega is showing in the World Superbike Championship,” says Schrötter, referring to the success of the Supersport World Champion, who currently leads the rider standings in the World Superbike Championship.

Schrötter now takes care of his own contracts. “I’m looking for the first discussions in Assen. There’s a long break until Misano and then we’ll be almost halfway through the year,” the German knows.

Contact with Bonovo-BMW is already there

In Assen, Schrötter has an eminent assistant in his box. Former MotoGP rider Jonas Folger supports his teammate at the WSBK weekend in Holland. Folger has a good relationship with Michael Galinski, Bonovo’s team boss.

“There is a German team in the World Superbike Championship,” says Schrötter, playing and moving to Bonovo. “Maybe it will be interesting for them to sign a German driver. There is no big choice. I am doing my job well at the moment, I think. Why? Of course that will be one of the biggest opportunities for me. But everything has to go together.”

“I am absolutely sure that I can also fight for podium places in the Superbike World Championship if I have the right bike,” says Schrötter confidently and makes it clear: “I don’t have to participate in the Superbike World Championship at any price. . I don’t have to drive for a team that regularly finishes 15th to 20th.”

“If in doubt, it’s better for me to ride in the Supersport World Championship with a solid contract and fight for podium places and titles rather than riding in the Superbike World Championship for less money and a bad bike. But “The Superbike World Championship is definitely it has many advantages,” notes the former Grand Prix driver.

Last weekend, BMW newcomer Toprak Razgatlioglu proved the capabilities of the M1000RR. Schrötter can easily imagine riding a BMW superbike: “As a German, as a Bavarian, sitting on a BMW can be a great story.”

“But success is more important to me. In my opinion, the best combination would definitely be a German team and success,” explains Schrötter, who is already in contact with Bonovo team manager Michael Galinski. “We know each other very well, also through Jonas everyone knows that I want to race in the Superbike World Championship,” he notes.

BMW praises Marcel Schrötter’s success, but…

Four BMW drivers in the World Superbike Championship are currently under direct contract with BMW. We exclusively asked BMW motorcycle racing director Marc Bongers if Marcel Schrötter is eligible in principle for WSBK 2025. But a German passport is useless because BMW ignores the nationality of drivers.

“We are an international company and we work internationally,” comments Marc Bongers and explains diplomatically: “All driver contracts go through BMW. At the moment there is no reason to change the current constellation.”

But Bongers also saw Schrötter’s impressive performance in the Supersport World Championship. “I am pleased that he is doing well. I speak to him regularly. He is doing a solid job in the Supersport World Championship,” praises the BMW manager.

The nationality of the driver does not matter for Marc Bongers (BMW). Grow

“On the other hand, there is always some risk involved in bringing a rider from the Supersport World Championship to the Superbike World Championship. For some riders it works well, for others it doesn’t,” explains Bongers.

Supersport World Cup 2024: Marcel Schrötter has a 100 percent chance of a podium

Ahead of the third race weekend of the season, Schrötter is just four points behind World Championship leader Yari Montella (Ducati). With three thirds and one second, Schrötter put in consistently good performances and is the only MV driver at the top of the championship.

“I am satisfied with my season so far in the Supersport World Championship,” Schrötter says. “I was on the podium in every race and I missed out on two wins. I’m sure that the first win is only a matter of time. The important thing is to always be in front.”

With its three-cylinder engine, the MV Agusta F3 is an exotic car in the Supersport World Championship field. “The MV is a motorcycle that you have to get used to. It’s not an easy motorcycle. You have to change your riding style,” says Schrötter.

Strengths and weaknesses of the MV Agusta F3

“Power is definitely torque and the engine in general,” reveals Schrötter. “High speed was our strength, but this was taken away from us, which revealed the limitations,” says the German, who was angered by the reform of the performance balance.

“For 2024, we focused on improving performance at lower speeds, but we are too slow,” regrets Schrötter. “We’re a little unsteady on the brakes. I’m struggling to break the bike very hard.”
