After the sudden suspension of subsidies for electric cars on Sunday, more and more manufacturers are taking the government’s share of the purchase payment. VW, BYD, Skoda and Subaru have now also announced this.

Stellantis Group started on Monday, followed by other brands like Smart, Mercedes, Cupra and Hyundai. On Tuesday, VW, BYD and Subaru also announced that they will pay the government’s share of the 4,500 euro environmental bonus.

VW pays full payment for models ordered by December 15th

As VW announced on Tuesday, full government payments will be made for all eligible models in the ID family for private customers that were ordered by December 15, 2023 but have not yet been accepted and approved. If these cars are delivered and registered this year, customers will receive financing of up to 6,750 euros.

If the delivery and registration takes place next year only by March 31, 2024, Volkswagen will pay a payment of up to 4,500 euros. That would be the initial amount valid for the environmental bonus from next year. The payment should be reduced from 4,500 euros to 3,000 euros from 2024.

“We will not let our customers down and at the same time we feel responsible to support the transition of the system to e-mobility. “Therefore we have decided to increase our share of the environmental bonus in a non-bureaucratic way,” said VW Sales Director Imelda Labbé.

BYD and Subaru are also involved

Like VW, Chinese automaker BYD is also receiving a full bonus, as the company announced on Tuesday. BYD is offering the same compensation and environmental bonus to customers who choose the Atto 3, Dolphin or Seal. For those whose vehicle is not due to be delivered until January, the applicable environmental bonus amount applies. A manufacturer’s subsidy of 2,677.50 euros also applies to all orders received by December 31 if approved by March 31.

Subaru also offers an environmental bonus for private customers. The condition is that the purchase contract is concluded by January 31, 2024 and the car is registered by February 29, 2024. “We will not let our customers down,” Subaru Germany boss Volker Dannath said. “Anyone who relied on government support towards an electric future and is now disappointed by the federal government can count on us: We will cover the full cost for private customers who decide on a Subaru Solterra by January 31, 2024 with the Environmental bonus.”

Skoda also pays

Skoda also guarantees private customers a share of the government’s environmental bonus, provided the electric vehicle ordered by December 15 has a confirmed delivery date of January 10, 2024 and is newly registered in Germany by December 31, 2023. For vehicles with of delivery confirmed from January 11, Skoda will pay an environmental bonus of 3,000 euros plus a manufacturer’s share of 1,500 euros.

The Federal Ministry of Economy announced on Saturday that as of Sunday (December 17), applications can no longer be submitted to the Federal Export Administration Office (BAFA) to obtain a bonus for the purchase of registered electric vehicles. This sudden end caused criticism in the car industry as well as in the SPD parliamentary group itself. A transition period would be needed here.
