New problems for Autopilot, Tesla’s semi-autonomous operating system. As reported by the agency App, in the latest fatal accident where a Tesla, with Autopilot active, collided with a motorcyclist who died. The driver of the Tesla in the crash in a suburb about 15 miles northeast of Seattle told Washington State Police that he was using Autopilot and looking at his cell phone while the car sped away. The 56-year-old Tesla owner was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter. The motorcyclist was 28 years old and his name was Jeffrey Nissen.

autopilot under attack

The car that struck the motorcyclist was a 2022 Tesla Model S. Authorities said they have not yet independently confirmed whether Autopilot was in use at the time of the crash. “We’re not at this point in the investigation. We’re still very early in the investigation,” Washington State Police Capt. Deion Glover said Wednesday. The death comes nearly four months after US auto safety regulators pressured Tesla to recall more than 2 million to add a warning system that can tell drivers to be careful when using Autopilot.

mandatory update

As part of a December recall, part of a two-year investigation into Teslas with Autopilot involved that collided with emergency vehicles parked on the side of the road, the US company agreed to update the Autopilot software to add warnings and alerts to drivers. Remember that this is a semi-autonomous driving system that in Tesla keeps the distance from the cars in front of it, however, Elon Musk’s company says on its website that the cars cannot drive alone, despite the name thinking quite the opposite. The monitoring system implemented by Tesla, which sends warnings to drivers if they do not see two hands on the steering wheel, is not enough, according to experts. According to the latter, an adequate monitoring system should have infrared cameras to ensure that drivers have their eyes on the road.
