Fernando Alonso at Austin GP: “I was lucky” / Formula 1

Fernando Alonso was kicked out of the points by the stewards after the Austin race. Looking back, the two-time champion is talking about his best race of the season.

In Austin, Fernando Alonso initially had every reason to be happy, because he finished seventh in the top 10 and thus finished in the points. But a protest from Haas saw him drop to 15th. The reason: Alonso was traveling with Lance Stroll without a rear-view mirror after a spectacular crash. Alpine has filed a protest against the decision of the law enforcement officers.

Although Alonso’s weekend in Austin ended in frustration, looking back on the Asturian’s record is good: “I think it was one of my best races of the season, if not the best. I fought throughout the race and at the end I had a great fight with Lando Norris, who was all the more important considering the championship battle against McLaren for fourth place in the constructors’ championship.

“The race started well for us and we managed to take advantage of the first safety car period. Then there was the incident with Lance, which we discussed with the stewards after the race. I was lucky that I was able to continue despite the incident and I was surprised when we changed the wing and the tires new and everything seemed fine,” says the two-time world champion.

The 41-year-old has this to say about the upcoming race in Mexico: “We are ready and we are confident that we can score strong points if we have a clean weekend. I am sure that the fight for fourth place in the constructors will continue until the end of the season in Abu Dhabi. That’s why we have to continue to use our opportunities as much as we can.”
