Fernando Alonso is hoping to “affirm” his participation in the upcoming Formula One race in Saudi Arabia with Aston Martin. The two-time World Champion is reportedly in negotiations with the team to secure a drive for the event, which will take place on December 5.
Alonso has not competed in a Formula One race since 2018, when he drove for McLaren. However, he has been keeping himself busy with a variety of other racing activities, including competing in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Indianapolis 500, and the FIA World Endurance Championship.
The Spaniard recently tested a current Formula One car at the Bahrain International Circuit and is said to have been impressed with the performance. When asked about his chances at the upcoming race, Alonso said he wanted to “confirm things” with Aston Martin before the event. He added that he still felt capable of competing at the highest level and was looking forward to the challenge.
The race in Saudi Arabia is expected to be a unique event, with the drivers having to contend with a variety of new obstacles. In addition to the high temperatures and sandy conditions, the track will also feature a number of tight corners, making it a challenging prospect for the drivers.
Alonso is no stranger to success in Formula One, having won two World Championships (2005 and 2006). He is also the only driver to have won the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Indy 500, and the Monaco Grand Prix in the same year (2018).
If Alonso is able to secure a seat at Aston Martin, he will join an impressive line-up of drivers, including four-time World Champion Sebastian Vettel, three-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, and seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher.
The race in Saudi Arabia is sure to be an exciting one, and with Alonso in the mix, it could be even more thrilling. The Spaniard is keen to prove that he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level, and is hoping to “confirm things” with Aston Martin ahead of the event.
