Huh, the electric Fiat 500e will also be sold as a petrol car?

Fiat wants to be fully electric by 2030. One of the cars that should make the switch is the Fiat 500e, the electric version of the iconic Fiat 500. But now it seems that the owner Stellantis is not ready to say goodbye to fuel oil after all.

At the beginning of March, Fiat reportedly asked suppliers to increase production by 500 in Turin to 175,000 vehicles per year. Only 77,260 were issued last year. That reports European Car News.

But according to the Italian newspaper Il Corriere della Sera, those 100,000 additional cars will not be EVs, but petrol cars. This is also confirmed by Motor News itself, which spoke to sources with knowledge of the matter. Fiat is considering building a gasoline 500e, because demand for the 500e appears to be lower than the company expected.

The Fiat 500 is disappearing from Europe

The petrol variant has the same engine as the Fiat Panda, 1 liter with 70 hp. The car will be in the market from the end of 2025 or the beginning of 2026. However, the Italian car maker has not yet officially announced that it will develop a petrol variant. The company currently still makes a petrol version of the old Fiat 500. The new 500e will replace the previous petrol version in Europe.

Italians buy fewer EVs

Electric cars are not popular in their home country of Italy. Right now it’s just four percent of new cars sold in the country are electric. So Italy has one of the worst performing EV markets. The Italian government wants to invest 930 million euros to encourage consumers to choose an electric car.
