Fiat Trepiuno concept car (2004)

On March 4, 2004, FIAT presented the Trepiuno study at the Geneva Motor Show. The short concept car showed the brand’s future style direction. That success paved the way for the new Fiat 500, which was presented in 2007. As a true symbol of the style of Made in Italy The Trepiuno concept built on FIAT’s great history with small cars and ushered in a new millennium for the brand. At the same time, the study came at a challenging time for brand renewal.

Inspired by the design of The new sixteenth century from 1957, the Fiat Trepiuno was a modern city car with a length of only 3.3 meters. According to the strategy Small and safe The new platform made of high-strength steel and aluminum provided increased safety, especially in the event of a frontal collision. The interior was characterized by white with reddish brown.

Roberto Giolito looks back: “The Advanced Design Department was founded only in 2002. The team was made up of young designers from different disciplines. Our idea was to remove any decorative elements of the historic Fiat 500 and visualize its minimalist design. Like Dante Giacosa , we used layers on top of each other. This resulted in a rounded body in the lower area and an almost uninterrupted transition between the windshield and the roof or glass roof.”

The Trepiuno name of the study came from the special interior layout, which had two full-size seats in the front row and emergency folding seats in the back. The design was very detailed, a look that was based on the Fiat 500 from 1957, but executed using modern methods. These included, for example, round lights and remote turn signals. The rear lights were designed as liquid crystal displays.

The success of Trepiuno’s research with the public and experts eventually led to its further development in the Fiat 500 series model.

Roberto Giolito adds: “Between 2004 and 2006, the entire FIAT team worked on the technology and design of this new car model. The project was led by the Trepiuno design team. The result was a production car that passed research in terms of style, attention to detail and also to the length of several centimeters.

And so the Trepiuno concept car became an example of one of the greatest commercial success stories of the FIAT brand of the 21st century.
