The Netherlands has had a lot to be proud of in Formula 1 in recent years.

The popularity of the Dutch Belgian has even managed to revive the Dutch Grand Prix. Next year there will be two heroes of the orange army with the arrival of Nyck de Vries. However, about fifteen years ago the situation was very different.

Monza, 2007

Bright place

Long before Max-mania, there was little to celebrate for Dutch F1 fans. Despite valiant attempts by men such as Gijs van Lennep, Jan Lammers, Huub Rothengatter and Jos Verstappen, the sport was far from successful. However, the bright spot came in 2007 with the establishment of a real Dutch F1 team.

The small sports car company Spyker had taken over Midland F1 Racing in mid-2006, at the behest of megalomaniac racing cyclist Victor Muller. In 2005, the team was still known as Jordan Grand Prix.

Under Muller this became the Midland Spyker F1, before a full transfer to the Spyker F1. Midland driver Christijan Albers was allowed to keep his seat and was joined by test driver Adrian Sutil. Spyker immediately tried to put itself on the map by switching from Toyota to Ferrari engines.

The nail meets the hammer

However, a bright spot for the Dutch F1 fan came out quickly. With a smaller budget, Spyker went on the same journey as the Midland, but this time with more expensive engines. Albers and Sutil were unable to make any progress using the designation F8-VII.

Sakon Yamamoto (Super Aguri) and Marcus Winkelhock who replaced them also did not use the car. However, Winkelhock went down in the history books by leading his first and only Grand Prix, after diving into wet tire pits on the warm-up lap before a flood. Unfortunately, he immediately lost that lead as the track began to dry up. Eventually, Marcus had to give up due to hydraulic problems.

Mallya

Adrian Sutil finally saved the team’s honor with an eighth place at Suzuka, Spyker’s only points of the season. By then, however, Spyker’s days in F1 were already numbered. During the season, beer and aviation and Indian fraud Vijay Mallya took over the team.

In 2008, Silverstone production continued under the name Force India. The Spyker F1 car was given a new color and some aerodynamic changes and continued for the extra season. The team would last until the network was shut down by Mallya in 2018. After taking over from Lawrence Stroll, the team was changed twice to Racing Point and Aston Martin.
