Ford cuts operations in Europe: wants to sell factory to BYD and lay off thousands of workers.

Ford has decided that its new generation platform will be produced in the Spanish factory in Valencia, and at the same time the amount of activity in Europe will decrease.

As a first result of these decisions, Saarlouis factory, in Germany, where the Focus series is currently produced, is not officially sold. According to The Wall Street Journal there would already be about fifteen companies interested, not all of them in the automotive sector.

One of these will be the Chinese BYDwhich has entered the European market with its electric cars, but currently they have to import them from China. But BYD manager Stella Li had said recently that her company was evaluating possible locations in the Old Continent to support production. According to rumors, Ford’s delegation will soon leave for China, to begin negotiations, which are currently in any case at a very early stage.

Meanwhile, the time is approaching in mid-February when Ford will have to decide what to do with its European employees. Now it is certain that there will be a significant reduction, but the exact number is not yet available. Earlier this week it leaked to cut at least 3,200 employees at the Cologne site alonebut layoffs may be extended to other areas.
