Ford Focus is not easy. In German registration statistics, competition has recently left a compact car behind. And even in the brand title itself, it is only enough for second place between the Kuga and Puma SUV. For the second half of life, Ford has once again released the fourth generation of its entire circuit, which is available as a sedan and station car, sharp polish. The newly upgraded model is now on sale starting at 28,250 euros.
At the first world show in 2018, the fourth Focus was still trying to put pressure on VW Golf and Opel Astra over the segment. Instead, it recently had to allow foreign competitors such as Seat Leon and Skoda Octavia to pass. This is not due to the basic features of the fifth door: agile chassis, deep security equipment and fair price range are among the benefits of the series even after adjustment. There is also little creativity. For example in the structure: The plum logo moves from the bonnet to the radiator grille, which absorbs the shark’s open lip character and thus reduces its previous intensity. Also new are headlights, which always come with LED technology and also provide matrix light on request.
Changes in the interior are more pronounced. Instead of the previous small screen, there is now a real-world example of a wide-screen dashboard that extends across the entire central dashboard. Climate control is now also operated through the display, which is relatively intuitive, but not nearly as uncomfortable as conventional keys. Most important, however, is the software behind the screen, which now also allows wireless updates. Data from the navigation system is now also received via a mobile phone connection – instead of the car itself, the calculation is now done in the cloud.
More modern and more powerful
The bottom line is that the new generation of Ford’s “Sync” information system is more modern and powerful than the software in the previous version. And the voice control is more understandable than the latter. Support systems are also more robust; The blind spot warning system, for example, provides operational impetus in the right direction when attempting to change a dangerous route.
Ford, on the other hand, has reduced the engine. The diesel engine is greatly reduced: the only option left is the 88 kW / 120 hp 1.5-liter engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The manual version and three other diesels are eliminated – Ford refers to lower requirements. The petrol type also includes three well-known 1.0-liter cylinders, which are available at 74 kW / 100 hp and 92 kW / 125 hp without 48-volt support and as a gentle hybrid with electric support and 92 kW / 125 hp . or 114 kW / 155 hp there.
The second was available with a short test drive, providing ample driving performance and, most of all, a good acceleration in low-speed frequencies and a normal, slightly roaring engine. If you want more power, you should stick to the 206 kW / 280 hp ST sports model, as 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engines, which are centered in terms of performance, are no longer available.
Ford has also reduced its range of accessories: the attractive price structure of “Cool & Connect” has completely disappeared, so the portfolio now starts with the “Titanium” design already equipped. However, sometimes only stock cars are available because production in Saarlouis has stalled due to delivery problems. Depending on the model, customers should be flexible or expect a six-month waiting period.
The end is visible
Face improvement four years after the launch of the market improves Focus, especially in terms of infotainment. Elsewhere, however, one observes that the compact car will not have a bright future in Ford’s new world. There is a small electronic version such as there is a complete hybrid or plug-in mixer – although two drivers are available for a very closely related Kuga Technical cross. Focus will have to compete with combustion engines for the last four years of its product life before it will probably be discontinued in 2026 and replaced by an e-crossover based on Volkswagen’s MEB architecture. So Focus fans should not waste too much time shopping.
