Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso signs for 2 additional seasons with Aston Martin


Alonso is in his second year at Aston Martin. He placed fourth in the championship last year. As a Renault driver, Alonso won the world title twice; in 2005 and 2006.

At 42, he is already the oldest runner in the sport’s top flight, but Alonso has previously shown that he is not quite there yet. There has been much speculation about Alonso’s future in recent weeks. He was named as one of the candidates for the vacant seat at Mercedes in 2025 due to the departure of Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari, but was also linked with Red Bull.

Alonso announced the decision in a short video on Instagram:

The message Alonso himself gave through Aston Martin’s media channels was short but powerful: “I’m here to stay”. In other words, I’ll stick with Aston Martin.

“Fantastic news,” team boss Mike Krack said of Alonso’s stay. “We have built a good working relationship over the last eighteen months and we share the same determination to make this project a success because when he decided to continue racing, he spoke to us first and we trust him.”

Alonso is the Formula 1 record holder with 381 Grand Prix starts He started with Minardi in 2001 and later drove for Renault, McLaren, Ferrari and Alpine. The Spaniard recorded 32 Grand Prix victories in his career. As an Aston Martin driver he has yet to win a race; he finished second three times and third five times. “He’s hungry for success, he’s riding better and he’s fitter than ever,” said Krack.
