Oscar Piastri: Damage prevention in the Chinese GP / Formula 1

While Lando Norris took the podium at the Chinese GP, his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri had to settle for eighth place. The Australian had a tough race.

The Formula 1 World Championship race in China started well for Oscar Piastri. The young McLaren star started from fifth place on the grid and was able to maintain his position during that time. But hopes of a good result were dashed when the Australian suffered a rear-end collision caused by Lance Stroll during the safety car phase before the restart.

The Aston Martin driver crashed into the back of Daniel Ricciardo in the hairpin braking zone, who in turn ended up behind the young McLaren driver. “The car was badly damaged, I don’t know how much time we lost because of that, but when I looked back after the race, it was gone a lot.”

“I think that explains to a large extent the deficit I had. In the first part of the race the performance seemed fine, I lost a bit of speed, but it was not too bad. But after the restart, all I could do was minimize the damage,” shouted the 23-year-old from Melbourne.

Piastri is now hoping for new parts that the team has planned for the next race in Miami. “I hope that they will make the car faster. Let’s see what we can achieve with this. “I hope, of course, that we will be able to fight for the podium positions regularly,” he said.
