Nico Rosberg & Lewis Hamilton: Crash in Mercedes / Formula 1

That’s the last thing a GP team boss wants to see: a collision between his two drivers. Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg has explained how things were handled at Mercedes when he and Lewis Hamilton.

The stablemates clash regularly in the premier league, to the frustration of the team at the command post. As a rule, the boss then gives a speech – the team is bigger than the driver.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff also faced this problem when, at the beginning of Formula 1’s hybrid turbo era, the Silver Arrows were the fastest and most victories went to Lewis Hamilton or Nico Rosberg.

The Englishman and the German battled it out in Spain 2016: clashing shortly after the start, Max Verstappen said thank you in his first race with Red Bull Racing and took a comfortable victory.

Years later, the now 38-year-old Rosberg from Wiesbaden spoke for the first time about the outcome of the bitter rivalry between himself and Hamilton. In the Sports Business podcast, the 2016 world champion revealed: “Because Lewis and I collided, we had to dig into our own pockets at Mercedes.”

A local fine was paid after an accident in Belgium in 2014, the money probably went to a non-profit organization. But the team management saw that there was more to come (and they were right), so according to Nico, it was put in the contracts: “We had to sign a clause that we would be responsible for compensation, regardless of who. for collision errors. And that cost me a pound 360,000, very painful.” Rosberg does not say on the podcast whether it was an accident in Spain.

According to the 23-time GP winner, this unusual move has proven successful: “We have made sure that we no longer move too close.”
