Italian automakers are returning to world competition after decades

After 60 years without racing in single-seater competition, Maserati is ready to make its debut in Formula E. The Italian carmaker is now a partner of the Monaco Sporting Group, which controlled Venturi in the world of electric cars.

For eight years, Venturi was present at the unit. The first five years as a development team, and for the next three years, it chose to be a customer team. And it was precisely in the last three years that the most telling results of the team occurred.

Venturi chose to become a customer of Mercedes, which had just entered Formula E. After a sixth season without much success, which marked the departure of Brazilian driver and former F1 driver Felipe Massa from the division after two years racing for the team of Monegasque, Venturi. bet on the Swiss Edoardo Mortara and the result happened.

In the seventh year, Mortara fought for the title with Nyck de Vries until the final eprix, and was the runner-up after two victories. He had Frenchman Norman Nato as his teammate.

Already last year, Venturi exchanged Nato for the experienced Lucas di Grassi. The Brazilian driver took some time to get used to the new team after seven years racing for Audi, but in the end, he was able to win. Again Mortara fought for the title and finished the championship in third place, with four wins. It was the best and last season for the Monegasque brand in Formula E.

The age of Maserati has arrived

Now, it’s time to forget the Venturi era and focus on the Maserati Era. Unlike the Monegasque team in recent years in Formula E, the Italian team will not be a client and carries its own forces.

Maserati retained Edoardo Mortara as its driver. The Swiss’s results in recent years make him one of the favorites to win the title this season, so it is good that he remains with the team despite the change in his brand.

Mortara is a driver who is ready to win the world title, and has shown to be as fast as the last world champions. If Maserati manages to find a reliable and fast car, Mortara will definitely fight for the championship again.

However, it is good for the Swiss to open his eyes with his new teammate. Maserati sought from Nissan the German Maximilian Guenther, the youngest winner in the history of Formula E, and who has already proven in other teams that he is a fast driver.

Guenther had a difficult start in Formula E. He started the season fifth for GEOX Dragon, and after a bad race, he was replaced by Brazilian Felipe Nasr. In the end, Nasr also failed to leave the back of the grid, and therefore, Guenther returned.

With several points scored in the final race of the fifth year, Guenther attracted the attention of other teams and was selected by BMW Andretti to replace the Portuguese Antonio Félix da Costa. And he did not do badly: he won two races in the sixth season, and another in the seventh, becoming one of the main names on the grid. Last year, he ran for Nissan and failed to repeat the good results of previous years.

With a pair of talented drivers, Maserati has everything to fight for the title. The car performed well in pre-season testing in Valencia, held last month. Maserati led almost every session with Max Guenther, and still had Mortara always in the top six. In other words: the team arrives in Mexico with great honor.
