Assen: The free Supersport training was for the Katz / Supersport World Championships

As free practice for the World Supersport Championship began at the TT Circuit in Assen on Friday morning, the rain returned. Anyone who didn’t get on track right away ended up completely behind.

At the end of the first Superbike practice session on Friday morning, the track in Assen was almost dry after overnight rain. When the only free practice session for the Supersport class started 15 minutes later at 11:20 am, there was light rain at first, then the rain increased and did not stop during the 40-minute session.

Anyone who didn’t set a personal best at the start ended up far, far behind. Can Öncü (Kawasaki Pucetti) was in a class of his own, the Turk spent 1:44.919 minutes, 1.436 seconds faster than Niki Tuuli (EAB Ducati) in second place Ondrej Vostatek (PTR Triumph) was already losing more than 2.6 seconds.

World Championship leader Yari Montella (Barni Spark Ducati) was 16th, 8.4 seconds back, while World Championship runner-up Marcel Schötter (MV Agusta) was only 20th (+9.6 seconds). Swiss Marcel Brenner (Viamo Kawasaki) finished in 31st place.

Since this year, Supersport drivers have had just one free practice session, with qualifying taking place on Friday at 4am.
