On Sunday, the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach took place on the streets of Long Beach, California to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the race there. In the end, six-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon edged out Southern California native Colton Herta by .9798 of a second to win the race.
“That was hard; that was really hard,” Dixon told indycar.com. “Honestly, I didn’t think we were going to make it, and they kept giving me the (fuel) number, and it wasn’t available… I was close but it wasn’t enough. Fortunately, we were on the safe side there.”
Scott Dixon’s strategic fuel saving skills were on full display as he masterfully ran the final 34 laps on a single tank of 100% Shell recyclable race fuel, which left many in awe.
In the closing laps, Josef Newgarden was closing in on Dixon before Herta pushed Newgarden from behind, going into the hairpin. The impact lifted Newgarden’s rear wheels off the ground and engaged his stall, allowing Herta and Palou to pass him and drop him to fourth.
“It seemed obvious,” Newgarden told it indyar.com. “He thought wrong and ran to me.
“I’m not saying we would get Dixon. It was very difficult for me to get the runs I needed. I think the traffic would give me an opportunity, so to run there, I was very happy. I think that would be my last chance. I don’t know if I would have removed it or not.â
Said Herta: “I think he (Newgarden) set up too wide and was cutting back and was a bit slow at the top, but ultimately it’s up to me to carry the right speed into the corner and not run into that area. behind people, and I thought it wrong.â
After Dixon and Herta, Alex Palou, Newgarden, and Marcus Ericsson completed the top five.
Nevada City native Alexander Rossi scored 20 points in the race and finished tenth.
Rossi struggled in qualifying even though he was the fastest Arrow McLaren driver who started 13th in row 7 next to teammate Pato O’Ward.
In the opening laps of Sunday’s race O’Ward hit the rear end of Rossi’s car enough to force a flat tire on his teammate, prompting IndyCar race control to issue a car-thru penalty against O’. cut
O’Ward could not recover from the penalty which saw him finish 16th overall while Rossi ended up fighting from the back of the pack and eventually held second place for a while before finishing 10th.
Rossi had the best finish of his Arrow McLaren teammates and is currently ninth in the IndyCar standings with one top ten finish this season.
Rossi and the IndyCar Series will return Sunday for the Alabama Indy Grand Prix for Kids at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama. Live coverage begins at 10 pm PT on NBC, Peacock, INDYCAR LIVE, and the INDYCAR Radio Network.
