A surprising decision by General Motors. Despite the recent facelift of the Chevrolet Bolt and the addition of a sibling, the Bolt EUV, both models will end production later this year. In a sense, they will be replaced in the version by the Chevrolet Equinox EV, a large electric mechanic, although, according to the promise, “cheaper than the Bolt”. Let’s add that the Bolt (in both versions) is the best-selling electric car in GM’s range, and it’s also the only model that the company can mass produce.
The end of the Chevrolet Bolt = transition to the Ultium platform
The unexpected decision of General Motors has a deep reason: the Bolt, although it is mass-produced, is built on its BEV2 platform, it also has Li-ion cells of the old design and the early generation. The company wants to replace the Ultium platform with more modern cells, so the decision to resign from a solution that has no future, even if it sells well.
The design of the Bolt began at the branch of General Motors in South Korea (!) in 2012. The production of the car began before the Tesla Model 3, in 2016. The company hoped that with prices and prices matching Tesla’s promise ($35,000), the Bolt would find a large number of buyers – but this did not happen.. Even sales in Europe did not help him, the car released as Opel Ampera-e enjoyed moderate interest due to poor price-performance ratio.

In 2021, a refreshed variant was shown alongside the slightly larger Bolt EUV built on the same platform. In the same year, it was found that several or more copies of the model (part of the production) were directly activated, which led to a recall and replacement. [modułów] battery at manufacturer’s expense. In 2023, General Motors wanted to produce 70,000 copies of the car, now it has been decided to stop its production.
The plant will be repurposed to produce Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra electric motorcycles. The direct successor of the Bolt (segment B), when it comes to customers, is the Chevrolet Equinox EV (segment C-SUV). Chevrolet Blazer (D-SUV).
