We can do it too, was Voge’s motto. And that is why the Chinese manufacturer is now presenting its maxi motorcycle, the SR4 Max 350.

This is Voge’s first ever scooter, and the SR1 125 has recently joined the model line-up. That’s pretty brave, because the range of maxi motorcycles has gotten pretty manageable over the past few years. Many manufacturers have reduced their offerings significantly due to lack of demand or have even withdrawn from this segment altogether. But with this new maxi motorcycle, the two-wheeler was not just blindly thrown into the market, and there are no complete strangers at work here: the Voge brand belongs to the manufacturer Loncin, one of the largest manufacturers of engines and two-wheelers in the country. China, and has been making BMW engines and motorcycles for 17 years now. Voge’s 350 is, unsurprisingly, a very close relative of BMW’s 400 scooter. In 2020, Voge launched four models in this countrythe range now includes about a dozen two-wheelers.

The Voge engine is almost as powerful as a BMW single cylinder

The performance data of the Far East scooter is slightly lower than that of Mid-range scooter BMW C400, which was convincing in the initial test: SR4 Max has 29 instead of 34 hp and a maximum torque of 30 Nm instead of 35 Nm. But the liquid-cooled single cylinder with a displacement of 350 cubic centimeters is still a very fast engine and so the 214 kg scooter can pull away with equal power, especially in city traffic.

You can also make fast progress on roads of 100 km/h and you can even swim safely on the road thanks to the top speed of 127 km/h and good wind protection. Since we are driving at high speeds here, you should know and follow the rules that apply on the highway. For a long time, however, at higher speeds, the wind behind the windshield roars a lot, so you can slow down or go back on federal and state roads.

In sharp lean corners, traction control intervenes

It’s clear that there’s a lot of BMW know-how in the chassis, because the Voge moves confidently through the bends. As long as the road is good and you don’t defy physics, the ride will remain smooth. Only if you run through curves too fast or enter lean corners that are unusual for scooters but can be controlled, it may happen that the traction control intervenes suddenly and reduces the engine power. This is annoying at first and you can drive slowly or you are ready for the handling of the scooter.

The environment is also the same: you have a good sitting position on the handlebars and good lumbar support. The windshield provides good protection and the anti-vibration mirrors provide adequate rear visibility. The passenger has a normal-sized seat and a footboard for his feet – however, this obscures the view of the side stand, which requires extra care when parking the scooter.

Cockpit with large display and lots of information

The cockpit is dominated by a very large TFT display with smartphone connectivity. It provides a wide range of information that is fortunately clearly structured and easy to read. What takes some getting used to – but eventually leads to success with a little practice and skill – is the possibility to make settings through different menu levels. Fortunately, you don’t need this very often in everyday life and you don’t have to worry about it once in a while.

You get a special feature on the fuel pump, because the tank cap has to be turned clockwise twice quickly or slowly once to open it. Why simple when it can be complicated seems to be the motto of the designers of this section. Since we managed to use less than four liters per 100 kilometers and the tank holds less than 13 liters, luckily we didn’t have to turn the hood too often. A distance of more than 300 kilometers is a big plus. Anyone on a tour who sees a motorcycle or motorcycle standing on the side of the road with a yellow scarf on the handlebars should know that this is a sign for another bike that has a special meaning.

Special gag: There is a camera in disguise

As a bit of a gimmick, there’s even a camera built into the front of the Voge SR4, which can be activated by pressing a button on the handlebars. Photos and videos are stored on a memory card, a drive that is located in the right storage section on the panel. The USB port and 12 V socket in the glove compartment on the panel should meet the needs of the new generation. LED cornering light and cornering lights as well as a keyless system are also not offered in this transfer class and price.

The SR4 will cost 6,399 euros at the dealer – a very competitive price. The BMW brothers cost around 800 euros more. If you want to save more money: With a seasonal license plate, i.e. a temporary registration number, you can get a year of cycling at a cheaper price.
