Rüsselsheim, April 2024 – For many classic car lovers, it is considered one of the most beautiful series of coupés of all time: the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint celebrates its 70th birthday. The world premiere caused a sensation at the Turin Motor Show in April 1954. Alfa Romeo recorded around 2,000 orders in the first few days of the trade show – a huge number for the time. The action shortly before the market launch was also surprising: two executives jumped from a helicopter in front of a large audience over the Alfa Romeo factory in the Portello district of Milan, where the “little Juliet” (Giulietta) was made. They were dressed as Romeo and Juliet from William Shakespeare’s play of the same name.

Giulietta was the first Alfa Romeo car model to have a female name. As “Fidanzata d’Italia” (the darling of Italy), it won the hearts of car fans and became a symbol of economic recovery. The number of units eventually reached six figures, for the first time in Alfa Romeo history. When the 100,000th Giulietta launched production at the Portello factory, Giulietta Masina, the muse of star director Federico Fellini, celebrated this historic moment with the company’s employees and management.

Special birthday logo and birthday party at the museum

The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is one of the most important economic pillars in the history of the brand. To celebrate the 70th birthday of the iconic lady, Centro Stile Alfa Romeo presents its own logo. On Sunday, June 2, 2024, the Alfa Romeo Museum invites all fans of the brand to an official birthday celebration. Part of the event is the opening of a special exhibition of “Giulietta, Fidanzata d’Italia” recognized together with the Registro Italiano Alfa Romeo. It honors the various versions of one of the most iconic cars of its era.

As part of the birthday celebration at the museum, a parade will take place at 10:30 am only with Alfa Romeo Giulietta from the first row (type 750/101, 1954 – 1965). At 11 am there will be a backstage talk organized by the museum that covers the history of the Giulietta. At 12.30 pm, Alfa Romeo Giuliettas from the second (Type 116, 1977 – 1985) and third series (Type 940, 2010 – 2020) will also have the opportunity to parade.

Alfa Romeo Italian Registry Program

This Sunday (June 2, 2024), the Italian Alfa Romeo Registry will organize the third edition of the competition to restore and preserve the “RealAlfa” at the Alfa Romeo Museum. One of the ten categories is reserved for the sedan version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta.

Registro Alfa Romeo also runs a birthday tour from Lake Garda to Arese, on the way participants stop, among other things, at Shakespeare’s Juliet’s house. The tour ends with a parade on the test track of the Alfa Romeo Museum in Arese.

Alfa Romeo Giulietta

Alfa Romeo won the first two Formula 1 world championships ever held with drivers Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio in 1950 and 1951. This sporting success was due to the series’ new model, which marked Alfa Romeo’s transition from exclusive manufacturer . Sports cars for the manufacturer of the big series announced.

Centro Stile Alfa Romeo developed several proposals for the Giulietta model. The Coupé, commonly called the Sprint at Alfa Romeo, was developed by future star designer Franco Scaglione for Bertone until series production. The result was a sleek, streamlined car with a minimalist look and a tall, rounded rear window. Carrozzeria Bertone also took over the bodywork for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint.

With the Giulietta model, Alfa Romeo entered the compact car segment for the first time and set new standards with racing technology. The 1.3-liter engine was made almost entirely of light steel, and valve control was carried out by two overhead camshafts. Even with its top speed of 170 km/h, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint was a clear step ahead of its competitors in the segment.

The improved Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce won its class in the 1956 Mille Miglia – still held as an unlimited road race from Brescia to Rome and back. Many victories on race tracks around the world followed.

The coupé was soon joined by other body versions: a sedan called the Berlina, a Spider designed by Pinin Farina with an eye on the convertible American market, a strong coupé Sprint Speciale in the future design of Bertone and the Giulietta SZ and intended Zagato. for the race. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Promiscua brought sports car performance to the station wagon segment for the first time.

From 1954 to 1965, 177,690 Alfa Romeo Giuliettas were produced in all model types. The highest number of models from the traditional brand to date emphasized the great appeal of “Little Julia”.
