A new competitor arrives in the Pickup market: there is also BYD

China’s largest car company, BYDhas launched plans for a a new cargo truck expected to be launched in the world later this year. This vehicle has been designed to compete with flagships such as the Toyota Hilux and the Ford Ranger.

Car characteristics

The BYD image will initially be available as a plug-in hybrid, with plans to introduce a BEV version in the future. The dimensions of the car will be 5,457 mm in length and 1,971 mm in width, with a wheelbase of 3,260 mm, thus surpassing the Ford Ranger in dimensions. The car will also have advanced technology developed by BYD, including the Car Charging function, which will enable it to activate external electrical devices using energy from the towing vehicle’s battery.

Platform and powertrain

The new BYD model will be based on the DMO Super Hybrid Platform. The car will have independent double wishbone suspension front and rear and will have all-wheel drive. As for the powertrain, BYD expects the car to have an output of around 350 kW. The powertrain is expected to be the same as BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao Leopard 5 model, which includes a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine paired with two electric units.

Price and battery

Although no specific information about the battery capacity has been released, it is expected to be a Blade Battery with LFP (lithium iron phosphate) cells. There are rumors that the battery capacity may be the same as 31.8 kWh as the Leopard 5 model. In China, pickups must follow certain usage rules, which is why many Chinese buyers tend to avoid them. Therefore, it is not surprising that this new model was created for international markets. There is still no official information about the price, but it is speculated that it could be around 200,000 yuan (equivalent to around 26,300 euros).
