Günther Steiner: “It was very exciting” / Formula 1

In the recent Formula 1 race in Austin, Kevin Magnussen was able to finish in points because he only made one pit stop. The choice of strategy was a test of nerves for the Haas team, as Günther Steiner admits.

In the end, Kevin Magnussen had to concede defeat to Sebastian Vettel in Austin. However, the Haas driver was able to celebrate four new World Championship points in eighth place. For the first time since the race weekend in Spielberg he managed to score. He was also able to do so thanks to the fact that he only had to change the tires once.

Looking back, team boss Günther Steiner says: “When Kevin said he could finish the race with his tyres, we thought: ‘Are you sure that’s possible?’ It wasn’t just a question of whether the tires would stop. But also whether the tire damage would remain moderate and not fall behind.”

“In this case, we have therefore put together a backup strategy to keep the loss of time within limits if the performance collapses. We were ready to take him to the pits as soon as possible and give him a soft tire if the lap times were too much,” says the South Tyrolean.

“It was a big shock because we knew that if we stopped a second time we would drop back to tenth place. And of course we wanted to do as well as possible. Kevin did a great job setting fast times without overheating his tires. In the end he was overtaken by Sebastian Vettel but it was an exciting fight. And sometimes the fight is fulfilling even if you lose,” Steiner explains.
