Federal Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) has announced an increase in support for companies due to the rapid rise in energy costs. Habeck said in the Bundestag that economic resources in Germany must be preserved and protected. For this purpose, the federal energy cost plan should be expanded.
In the future, aid should no longer go to companies that are involved in international trade, but also to companies that are making losses. That applies to the industry. Support should also be extended to small and medium enterprises. In addition, down payments should be made quickly, said Habeck.
The federal government had launched a program where companies could receive subsidies for their increased costs of natural gas and electricity. The Ministry of Economic Affairs had already said that the expansion of medium-sized companies was planned. Referring to a survey of medium-sized industrial companies, the Confederation of German Industry reported that the sector is facing fundamental problems due to excessive energy price increases.
Habeck said the federal government has established a special fund worth 100 billion euros for national defense. Financial resources must now be mobilized with equal determination to defend Germany’s economic resources.
Uncertainty about the suspension of the debt brake
The Prime Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Reiner Haseloff (CDU), warned in the Bundestag about the wave of bankruptcies. He urgently called for a strong general concept to overcome the conflict. At the same time, Haseloff questioned the breakdown of the debt to be able to face the challenge.
Within the union of traffic lights in the federal government, there are different opinions as to whether the debt brake that has been suspended in recent years because of this epidemic and set in the Basic Law should be reconsidered in the coming year. It only allows the federal government to take out new loans on a limited basis.
