Alfa Romeo Giulietta celebrates its first 70 years – Historic Cars and Motorcycles

Alfa Romeo Giulietta blows seventy candles, an iconic model, which was born from the need for Alfa Romeo Giulietta to address a wide audience without betraying its DNA in terms of style and performance. The design of the Bertone designer was the result of the creativity of Franco Scaglione, already the author, among others, of the “33 Stradale” of 1967.

The Giulietta, with its low, smooth and clean line, and the rear view expressed by the sliding and covering rear window, as well as the side “fins”, exuded power even when it was not in motion. Presented on 21 April 1954 at the Turin Motor Show, in the coupé variant, the Giulietta “Sprint”, a few days after the event, had already received something like 2,000 orders, an amazing number for the period. Beneath its striking shape hid a 1.3-liter twin-cam four-cylinder engine made entirely of aerospace-grade aluminum, capable of pushing it to nearly 170 kilometers per hour.

Performances that allowed Sprint, in the “Veloce” version, to win its class at the 1000 Miglia in 1956, and several victories on tracks and roads around the world. Later, other versions were added to the Sprint such as the sedan, the Spider and the “short tail” Giulietta SZ, for a total of 177,690 Giuliettas built from 1954 to 1965. The success of the Giulietta was that time from the production lines. for Portello sedan number 100,001 came out, even Giulietta Masina, the muse of Federico Fellini, arrived to celebrate the first stage of six-figure production of the Milanese company.
