Madrid – A cow neck in a blue shirt sits on a dock in the front row, second from the left. A sign is stuck on his chest with the letters PL: “Procesado libre”, it is generally condemned. Will it continue to be so?

After 30 years in half the world, things are getting harder for Frank Hanebuth (58), former president of the “Hells Angels” in Hanover. The famous musician in Germany has been on trial near Madrid since Monday for money laundering, illegal possession of weapons and the creation of a criminal organization. He faces up to 13 years in prison if convicted.

Most of the 48 defendants appeared in person. Three were connected via video link for medical reasons, four are still fragile. Hanebuth (first row left) sat in the first row

▶︎ No more happiness for “tall” (1.98 m), who always showed himself as a clean person, as a bully with a motorcycle and a good heart? Like no other German rocker, Hanebuth has been walking the fine line between social grandeur and gangster boss for years.

Hanebuth comes from a middle class family. His father was a school director, his mother a secretary, he learned carpentry and worked as a bouncer in the neighborhood bar “Schwarzer Peter” in Steintor in Hanover. He becomes the head of the rocker club “Bones MC”, runs a nightclub, and in 1999 his club joined the “Hells Angels”. Hanebuth becomes head of the constitution in Hanover.

Because he calms down the red light district, local politicians celebrate him as “a good example of how to deal with crime in the environment”. That doesn’t always work: Hanebuth has to go to prison for 3.5 years for grievous bodily harm.

This does not harm his reputation: in 2010 he made peace with the enemy “Bandidos” and the influence of the media. His lawyer, a close friend of Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, is busy working to rehabilitate the unjustly feared rocket boss.

When GSG9 raided his mansion in 2012 and shot his dog, but found no evidence of a contract killing, Hanebuth felt he had been vindicated as a victim. “Hells Angels Hannover” are disbanded, he goes to Mallorca. The prosecution now claims: In Palma, Hanebuth picked up where he left off in Germany.

He remains a rock musician with two faces: in 2017 he married his girlfriend Sarah to legendary music and with a white Rolls Royce. In 2020 he was fined 4,800 euros for beating a car mechanic and his friends.

The court deals with this first day of the trial: Which of the 49 defendants has confessed and can expect a light sentence? Not Hanebuth. His lawyer says there is nothing against him. Everything is based on the assumption that “Hell’s Angels” is a criminal organization. But there is no evidence for that.
