The start of production at Chery’s European plant should begin at the end of summer, with the Asian giant hiring 150 employees who previously worked for Nissan, who are currently undergoing special training courses, according to what was reported by Automotive News Europe , as well. expected by the Spanish government. In Chery’s plans, total employment will reach 1,250 workers for the site.

“Once sufficient production is achieved, we will plan to export to Europe and other countries, turning the Barcelona site into one of Chery’s main export facilities in the world”, said Executive Vice President of Chery Guibing Zhang. The Omoda 5 and Jaecoo 7 SUVs will be produced at the Barcelona plant, two models of the brand integrated with Chery and designed specifically for Europe.

Chery and EV Motors will put up around 400 million euros to finance the plant, while Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez wants to emphasize how Spain is becoming one of the biggest electric vehicle hubs for Europe. This will also be based on the mobility policy support program launched in 2020, with 5 billion allocated to sustainable development on wheels. EV Motors will also benefit from the agreement, with the aim of relaunching the Spanish brand Ebro, which stopped the production and sale of models in 1987: the first vehicles will be two SUVs, one plug-in hybrid and one with an ICE engine, scheduled for a quarter of the fourth of 2024.
