Honda Civic vs Mazda3: Which compact is more economical?

Honda Civic vs Mazda3: Which compact is more economical?

A liter of premium gasoline is sometimes almost two euros more expensive. Gas stations are becoming scary places. There are also cars, so it doesn’t hurt that much. No, we don’t mean electric cars. We are talking about conventional compact cars, with a combustion engine under the hood and even a lot of guts: the Honda Civic and Mazda3 compete as relatively economical gasoline engines.

With the introduction of the new Civic, Honda is putting complex technology in the golf league to quench the compact’s thirst (ad 5.0 liters per 100 kilometers) and perfectly clean its exhaust gases.
Honda Civic e:HEV

Big car: In terms of space, the Civic clearly beats its competitors – the car is and looks airy.

Very early: The combination of a 2.0-liter gasoline engine, an electric motor and an additional generator unit, including a special power transmission without a gearbox, really works very economically and unexpectedly without complaints in the Civic e: HEV – we are certainly surprised.

Mazda is breaking its promise of utility

A counterpart to the Civic e:HEV comes from Mazda. Here the developers have set aside the four-cylinder unit 3 e-Skyactiv X 2.0 M Hybrid and additional mechanics in a very difficult way – to let it open on the road in a very simple and beautiful way.
Mazda 3 e-Skyactiv X

According to WLTP, the Mazda3 e-Skyactiv X should consume only 5.3 liters per 100 km. In our test it is even thirstier.

The 2.0er with less electricity and a weak charge, which turns on according to the Skyactiv-X principle, should not consume more than 5.3 liters of Super per 100 km. Sounds good – we will check that.

The Civic has a central feel

First for the character of the two. After a few meters on the Honda, the question arises: is this really a compact car? Civic looks airy, full, touches well, does something. It can also be middle class. In fact, the Honda beats the Mazda in terms of space and the sense of space on key points. In addition, the trunk is larger, the back seat can be folded more easily, the door panels are larger.

In addition, the Civic is designed to be more comfortable. Where the sportier, more powerful Mazda finds it difficult to iron it out smoothly, the Honda hugs the road more gently. The hard drive system also does not bother you. The interplay of the pure electric drive, the unique combustion engine operation and the variants connected via the cluster and electric switches work soundly, but in the end they are amplified and hidden in a pleasant way.

In terms of quality, Honda can improve

This sometimes feels too much for the driver, especially when accelerating a little, but it always goes well and even at high speeds it still pushes forward. One can say here: Honda is a universal car, possibly the most fun in this test. But it’s disappointing: The Civic looks lovelessly assembled, with unfinished painted areas on the intakes and unstable armrests detracting from the sense of quality.

Worse, Honda follows the current trend of controlling everything from the main touchscreen. There are many menus and small levels, the “target points” for selecting tasks are small, the work area is far away – this makes the operation difficult, in the end the system is very annoying.

The operation works best in Mazda3

That works well in the Mazda: the reason is a small knob on the center console. Here you can GPS and fully control the infotainment. As in the Honda, the Mazda driver also looks at the all-round speed clearly drawn, the climate is set using the rotary control – that’s how it should be.

Mazda 3 e-Skyactiv X

Easy to understand: Mazda relies on a rotary button on the center console for steering – which works very well.

The advanced engine technology in Mazda is rarely seen

As with the Honda, there’s little evidence of the 2.0 engine’s hard work inside. The four-cylinder runs linearly through its speed range, there’s not much thrust – despite the machine’s supercharging – but small filtered undertones.

However, the Skyactiv-X technology does not work like Honda’s stock idea. According to our tests, the Mazda3 burned an average of 6.7 liters of Super – at least 1.3 liters more than the Civic. It’s a shame for Mazda, especially since it introduces more mature front seats (with better lateral support) that are more suitable for long journeys.

For the sake of completeness: Even if the 3 is behind in the sprint, on the highway it depends on the Honda, which is limited to 180 km / h. But that is not a necessary discipline when oil prices are around two euros.
