On May 30, the second modified IONIQ 5 N will be presented in front of the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring

With a new generation of enthusiasts ready to get behind the wheel of the IONIQ 5 N, Hyundai is all set to thrill the public with the 102nd edition of Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC)which will take place on June 23. The two 650 horsepower IONIQ 5 N will aim to set a record as the “Highest Production Electric SUV/Crossover”, in a presence that will see Hyundai release a total of four vehicles.

“We are coming back to the mountain stronger than ever, with an electric crossover that is unique in its category,” said Till Wartenberg, Head of N Brand and Motorsport. “Hyundai has historically always brought new technologies and new products to Pikes Peak and the IONIQ 5 N is faithful to this tradition, because it represents a new concept of high performance EV. The IONIQ 5 N will show what customers can expect from their vehicles.

The drivers of the IONIQ 5 N who will try to win the record as “Electric Production SUV/Crossover” are Paul Dallenbach and Ron Zaras. Dallenbach has won the PPIHC eleven times and set the all-time record in 1993. Zaras is a newcomer to the competition and the newest member of the team: a media person and former Hoonigan executive, he was also chosen to explain the story of Motorsports. Enthusiast is getting ready to take on the big challenge of competing in Pikes Peak.

“For a climber, the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is a bucket list event, for me it has been since the first time I saw the movie ‘Climb Dance’ with a 56k internet connection,” commented Zaras. “So it’s a great honor to race here for the very first time, with the IONIQ 5 N and the support of the amazing team at Hyundai. I’m happy to share my journey from a young spectator making my debut as a competitor, as challenging as that journey can be to be.”

Additionally, Hyundai will debut two special IONIQ 5 Ns to compete in the PPIHC ahead of the ADAC RAVENOL 24h Nürburgring on May 30, which will be driven by Dani Sordo and Robin Shute. Shute is a four-time overall winner and reigning King of the Mountain at Pikes Peak, while Sordo is a World Rally Championship driver for Hyundai Motorsport.

Hyundai chose to pursue the PPHIC record for “SUV/Crossover Electric Emissions” with the IONIQ 5 N because this model represents the capabilities of every high-performance N vehicle. The IONIQ 5 N was tested in extreme temperatures and locations, developed and fine-tuned especially at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for its high performance career. It is supported by technology and design improvements, such as WRC-inspired integrated drive axles, improved temperature management, specially tuned brakes and an industry-leading 0.6G regenerative power.

Thanks to the rigorous testing process of the IONIQ 5 N, only minor updates have been made to comply with competition rules from a safety perspective. The driver’s seat was replaced with a Recaro Pro Racer SPA Hans seat. The seat belts are HANS-compliant six-point Sabelts. The rear seats were removed and the roll cage and fire suppression system installed.

In all other respects, the Pikes Peak-ready IONIQ 5 N is a regular IONIQ 5 N. In the future, the red color will be replaced by the new and attractive Hyundai N model.
