Hyundai will increase its production significantly

Buoyed by subsidies given to Korean communities, Hyundai is expected to increase its capacity to produce hydrogen buses six times this year.

Although sales of hydrogen vehicles fell sharply in South Korea last year, the bus industry is booming. The only manufacturer of hydrogen buses in South Korea, Hyundai from a site in Jeonju, in the center of the country, the manufacturer is said to be planning to increase its production sixfold, from 500 to 3,000 buses a year. In terms of sales volume, the manufacturer is expected to quadruple its figures this year, from 370 to nearly 1,500 buses.

Great grant

If the hydrogen bus is experiencing such growth in South Korea, it is because the government has decided to provide the necessary resources to encourage the community to prepare. Today it is sold between 700 and 800 million won (470 to 540,000 euros), Hyundai’s bus benefits from 300 million won in government subsidies.

By 2024, the Korean Ministry of Environment has planned enough funding to finance up to 1,720 buses. Last year, this was reduced to 700 vehicles.

An interesting point: this increase in aid for hydrogen buses is accompanied by a 30% reduction in that given to electric buses. One way for the Korean authorities to promote its industry is to deal with the large increase in the presence of Chinese electric buses in the market.
