Hyundai Rotem presented the EMU-320. It is the fastest train in South Korea – it can travel at a maximum speed of 320 km / h.
Hyundai Rotem is currently executing a contract for the development and delivery of 2 eight EMU-320 vehicles and 19 six EMU-260 vehicles (later called KTX-Eum). It was signed in 2016. Both models have the same design, but differ in top speed – 320 and 260 km / h, respectively. The first EMU-320 is now ready and the second is scheduled for completion in November. The remaining part of the order, namely 19 KTX-Eum trains, was delivered to Korail in 2020-21.
The EMU-320 and KTX-Eum trains are based on the HEMU-430X project, an experimental high-speed train designed to travel at 430 km/h. This train was manufactured by Hyundai Rotem in 2012 and was released as an exclusive vehicle. The new EMU-320 is a complete gravity and distributed traction unit. The previous prototype of the Hyundai Rotem high-speed train, KTX-Sancheon, has been operating in South Korea since 2009 and reaches a speed of 305 km / h, but it is a push train.
According to the manufacturer, the design of multiple train units made it possible to reduce the maximum axle load. The same seating arrangement was used in all the carriages. Traction and braking characteristics were also improved by spreading the drive over a larger number of axles. As emphasized by Yong-Bae Lee, president of Hyundai Rotem, the need for distributed traction is due to the large number of curves and short distances between stations on the Korail network. – This system is also favored by other high-speed operators around the world – adds the president of Hyundai Rotem.
The EMU-320 can accelerate from 0 to 300 km / h in 230 seconds. The previous KTX-Sancheon model takes 316 seconds to do this. Unlike KTX trains, the seats on the EMU-320 have more legroom, wider armrests, USB ports, inductive chargers and screens with in-flight entertainment. The eight-seater EMU-320 will accommodate 515 people on board. KTX-Eum seats 380 people inside.
Hyundai Rotem wants to enter the international market with the new EMU-320 high-speed train. – The company will do everything possible for this. We are particularly looking at the Turkish and Thai markets, where high-speed rail is currently being developed Yong-Bae Lee agrees.
