Subaru will phase out the Legacy in 2025 in favor of electric SUVs


Another sedan bites the dust. This time, it’s about Subaru Legacy. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that its mid-size car will end production at the end of the 2025 model year after work that dates back to 1989.

The Legacy was the first car ever Subaru has built in its factory in Indiana, USA, especially to meet the needs of the American market. More than 1.3 million copies have been sold in its six generations.

In a press release, Subaru admitted that the abandonment of the Legacy is explained by consumer preference for SUVs and crossovers, but also the transition to electric vehicles that the brand is preparing to produce.

In the US, some 25,000 Legacys were sold last year compared to 160,000. outside. At home, we are talking about only 351 units of the first and more than 12,000 of the second. Subaru also sold 1,857 of its models single electricity in Canada.

For 2025, the Legacy will not undergo any changes, remaining available in the GT version with a 260 horsepower engine. The current generation started in 2020, with an update in 2023. After leaving, the compact Impreza and sportsman BRZ will remain the only cars in the range – but for how long?

About a year ago, Subaru announced that four new electric models will appear before the end of 2026 and that all should be sold in North America. These will be services, no surprise.

One of them will take the form of an SUV with three rows of seats (likeClimbing) and will be manufactured in Kentucky in 2025 – not by Subaru but by its partner Toyota. The latter will assemble in parallel Its three-row electric SUV.
